Moving takes a lot of planning, and that includes knowing what your moving rights are. Read on to find more about your moving rights and what you can do to prepare.
We've put together a small list to get you started on your journey -- and the first step starts with a single box.
I asked for and received a quote after a couple weeks waiting. I agree to the quote of nearly $8000 with a delivery window of 2-3 weeks. After almost 3 weeks waiting for a confirmation, i called the mover and they told me nothing had been finalized, pushing my moving date by at least a month. This is the most unprofessional company I have worked with in years.
All The Right Moves have moved me twice this past year and both moves were done quickly with respect for my items and the houses I was leaving and moving in to. They have their own blankets, plastic wrap for dressers and use the blankets as rugs if necessary. They were honest and fairly priced too!
I would recommend these guys to anybody the owners is very nice they know what they are doing because they have years and years of experience I would prefer to go with them over any big moving company
Horrible experience. We were quoted $1324 for the packing portion of the move and given a target delivery time of 6 days. After we moved to our new placed we were notified that no one is available to deliver our possessions for another two weeks. And the new target delivery time is the week when both my husband and I will be out of town. We notified Schroeder about this and were ignored. We were forced to contact a second moving company in order to get our possessions in a reasonable time frame. Once we received our things I realized that most of the boxes were packed half full at best - there were jumbo boxes with two bottles or wine or a lamp shade - and we were being charged for each box. This is at best dishonest and essentially theft. In addition, the glass shelves in the curio hutch were broken or missing because they were carelessly wrapped in thin sheets of paper. Meanwhile they bubble wrapped by tupperware. And to top it all off, the final bill is $1900+ even though the actual weight was nearly 100 lb lighter than estimate. Of course we called Schroeder again. This time we were told this new bill includes an extra "warehouse holding fee" and that it's my husband's fault for not overseeing the movers during the packing process. In summary, this is an unscrupulous and dishonest company.
We've moved internationally and from coast to coast. Our experience with JC Triplett & Sons Moving Company exceeded our expectations. Mr. Triplett and Janell were on time when they arrived to give me a quote. I instantly felt they would give me the special care of a privately owned company and the professionalism of a National moving company. Janell promptly answered all my questions before our move. On the moving day, the good looking trucks pulled up and the guys were ready! Lorenzo, introduced himself as the man in charge. He and his crew were polite and courteous. They worked hard ensuring everything was properly wrapped and secured on the truck. They were helpful in placement of our furnishings. When all was unloaded, Lorenzo asked me if there was anything else he could do to be helpful. Janell called a few days later for feed back on our move and to thank me for choosing them. I would recommend JC Triplett and Sons Moving Company to all my family and friends.
I don't know who write the reviews here. Three guys did my moving. Took double the time compared to other previous moving company I used and they charge $120 an hour. You do the math. I had to pay $800 for 1 bedroom and 8 miles distance. I see some damages to my furniture also.
So I've moved a few times and it seems like the experience has always gotten worse and worse. Bill and team completely changed that trend! They showed up right on time for the move to Wauwatosa. I had a 2 bedroom (queen bed, dresser, chest, and night stands), office, dining room, and living room with a flat screen TV to move. They brought a truck with plenty of space and carefully wrapped up everything. The few times I helped they were very thankful.Overall this was the perfect moving experience. They're great guys, very focused on the job, and have completely changed my mind when it comes to movers. If I ever find myself needing to move again I'll definitely be using JIm and team again. Do yourself a favor and don't look any further than these guys.
I was lucky enough to have a friend recommend Hernia Movers to move from our three story town house to another three story house. We have had terrible moving experiences in the past, but had Hernia Movers move us this morning. I couldn't wait to write a review so that other people will hopefully know how great these guys are and not go through the hell of terrible movers the next time they have to move. We had three guys and they brought their moving truck. All of our furniture, even very large pieces, was moved down the stairs from the old house and then back up the stairs at our new place without a single scratch on our walls or furniture. They arrived right on time and were very friendly and professional. We were in contact with Will to set everything up. They finished the job ahead of schedule which was great because we saved money. Other movers in the past have taken their sweet time in order to charge more hourly. Super frustrating. Anyway, we could not be happier with our moving experience this time around. Definitely call these guys next time you have to move.
LIARS & THIEVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!Have used this company several times prior to this last time and they had always done great work. NEVER AGAIN. Scheduling of my move with Bill went fine. Then moving day came. Arrived late at 8:40 am. Told me they would not move hot tub as scheduled because it was not disconnected. I proceeded to disconnect tub and when finished I let them know. They were not happy. I asked them to start in garage with boxes and they did exactly OPPOSITE of what I asked. They were very rude when asked any question. They knocked over boxes and bookshelves in my kids room, lost screws and bolts on 2 beds they dismantled. After packing for one hour, they went out to start hot tub move. They stood outside looking at it for an $180/hour and then came into my house at 10:42 am and said they were not moving hot tub and were heading to my new house. Half my house was still not packed. I asked them to take the rest of my packed items and furniture. They said NO and that they had scheduled a five hour move and they needed an hour to drive and two hours to unload. They had only spent an hour packing and my new house was 3 miles away. REALLY??? They had brought two trucks based on the size of my home and didn't even leave with one full. Upon calling the office I could not reach Bill who I had worked with for all my arrangements. I said the crew needed to come back and get the rest of the stuff. They told me they would not be coming back and that I needed to meet them at the new house to take delivery of my items. Lance (acting manager on that day) was obnoxious and verbally abusive and would not even discuss what his movers had left behind and the work they did not do. The movers left so much undone: outdoor dining set with six chairs and 3 tables, 40 boxes in basement (4 without tops that infuriated the movers somehow), 7 pieces of big artwork, huge outdoor grill, 4 bookcases, living room area rug, 4 kitchen chairs and kitchen table and more. I said I would not take delivery of my items they did have until they picked up the remainder. Lance said not only would they NOT get my other items, that I could not have the furniture of mine they did have unless I paid $500, and I could come to their offices to pick up my furniture. There were no other moving companies available on such short notice. I went to their office to talk to Hernia Movers and they would not even talk to me - Lance motioned to one of the men in my group to indicate he would talk to him but not me. Hernia Movers not only wasted a day of mine off work to move, but held my items hostage. I was forced to hire people off the street at $20/hour to help me move and go hire a U-Haul two days in a row to get the job done. I've spent over $1600 in bribe fees to get my stuff back and hiring strangers to help and moving trucks. I lost another day of work. I have pieces missing from the beds and they cannot be assembled so my children and I are sleeping on the floor. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BEEN TREATED SO HORRIBLY by the entire staff of HERNIA MOVERS. The movers were rude, mean and disrespectful not to mention slow and unprofessional. It's sad to see this company lose respect in this community. They used to be such great movers! I used them often and recommended them to everyone I knew about how hard working they were.
Every move is different, so it's vital to choose a moving company that's right for you. The first consideration you should make when hiring these professionals is how far you're moving.
Depending on the moving company, local moves are typically anywhere between one and 100 miles within the same state. Local moves are less complicated to plan, both for you and the movers you decide to hire. They're typically priced based on how much you need to move, how many movers the company plans to provide and how long the job is estimated to take.
Long-Distance and Interstate Moves
Even if you're staying in the same state, you may still technically be planning a long-distance move - though the exact mileage varies by moving company, these are typically moves that are more than 50 to 100 miles long or across state or country lines. In fact, even if you're moving within the same state but you have to go through another state or country first, it's likely considered an interstate move, rather than a local one. That's because the movers are technically transferring items between state lines, which means they'll be responsible for having the correct licensing and insurance in place.
Long-distance moves are much more complicated to plan, typically requiring you to pay numerous extra expenses for everything from shipping items to renting storage space.
Are you making a big move and trying to figure out exactly how much you should plan to spend? Or are you on a tight budget and looking to hire a mover who can keep costs low? Either way, it's important to understand how exactly moving companies charge their customers.
As mentioned above, for local moves, companies will charge based on the number of movers they provide and the amount of time they'll need to spend on the project. Generally, the more rooms in your apartment or house, the more movers and time you can expect to be charged for. The price of long-distance or interstate moves, on the other hand, will be based on the amount of belongings you have - and more specifically the weight of those belongings. The heavier the boxes or items you're shipping across state or country lines, the more expensive your move will be.

Typically, the moving company will send someone to your home who will do a walk through of each room, making note of the furniture, valuables and other belongings in each one. Then, he or she will provide an estimate. The exact amount you pay may, however, be different from the amount declared in the estimate. That's where the type of contract comes in.
Nonbinding vs. Binding Contracts
For any move, a company will ask you to sign a contract. It's crucial to know exactly what type of contract you're signing, though, to understand how much you can expect to pay. In basic terms, there are two types of moving contracts: binding and nonbinding. Binding, as well as binding not-to-exceed, contracts are the most preferable for people hiring movers. These list an estimated price the moving company cannot charge more than. So, even if your local move takes an hour longer or your belongings are heavier than expected for an interstate move, you're still only responsible for paying a fixed amount.
Nonbinding contracts, on the other hand, have no fixed final number. Instead, they list a rate - by the hour or by the pound/kilo - and you're responsible for paying exactly how much your move costs in those terms.
Keep in mind that movers provide a variety of services, many of which you may not require. These can affect how expensive your move will be. For example, a full-service move that includes packing and unpacking will be pricier than a local move that only includes loading the truck, driving it to the new home and unloading it.
For any move, there may be extra costs beyond the typical services offered. If you're asking your movers to transport large, hard-to-move items, like pianos, for instance, you'll likely pay an extra fee. Likewise, if your apartment building doesn't have an elevator or the truck has to be parked far from your home, you may be charged extra. Ask about these potential expenses when signing your contract.
Don't rush through the process of hiring a moving company. Make sure the movers you hire are dependable, reputable and the right fit for your needs.
Look for Reviews and Recommendations
When hiring movers, it's a good idea to both look at reviews online and ask your friends and family members for recommendations. Personal endorsements will go a long way toward helping you determine whether you can expect the company to do a quick and professional job.
Choose Top Candidates
As you're vetting candidates through reviews and recommendations, narrow your selection to three or four top options. Make sure the companies offer the type of move you're looking for, whether it's interstate or local. These three or four companies are who you'll contact for estimates.

However, this isn't the only factor you should use when choosing movers, especially for more complicated jobs. In fact, you may be willing to pay a little more to hire quality movers who can ensure the safety of your belongings. Don't be afraid to call these companies and ask questions.
During the hiring process, you want to make sure of three things: First, that the moving company is reputable and has the proper licensing and insurance. Second, that the movers are dependable, professional and committed to doing the job correctly. Finally, that the estimate provided is binding and that you're aware of any potential excess costs. Call the FMCSA
For long-distance or interstate moves, you can easily check that companies have the proper licensing and insurance, which is a clear indication that they're legitimate. All interstate moving companies must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, so call 888-368-7238 to confirm the licenses, insurance and credentials of the movers you're considering. The FMCSA can also tell you if any complaints have been filed against a particular moving company.
Check with the American Moving and Storage Association
For both local and long-distance moving companies, AMSA is another good place to check out a company's legitimacy. Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.

Pack and Transport Your Valuables
If you have items that are emotionally or financially valuable to you, do your best to pack and move them yourself. Keep jewelry, expensive artwork, inherited valuables and even costly electronics in your own car - that way you'll have complete control over their safety at all times.
Choose a Moving Company That Plans Ahead
Moving companies can better keep your belongings safe when the movers plan ahead. What does this mean? Many companies take extra time to measure doorways, halls and stairways to find the safest route in and out of your home. They should also provide furniture blankets, covers and moving pads to keep both your home and your belongings free of scratches or other damage.
Keep the Moving Area Safe
There are some things you can control on moving day and some things you simply can't, such as the weather. If you're moving on a snowy, icy or rainy day, keeping all of your paths, stairways and walkways clear and dry is crucial. This can help protect both the movers and the large items they're carrying to and from the truck.
The subject of tipping is relatively unclear when it comes to movers. However, there is a general rule of thumb that most people in the industry agree on: Tip your movers if they've done a good job and you think a tip is warranted.
Generally, a 5 percent tip is considered appropriate, though some people recommend paying $20 per day, per mover for basic, local moves. However, almost everyone agrees you should first do a quick walk-through of your home to check for any damage to your furniture or belongings and to make sure everything is where you'd like it to be.
If you do decide to give a tip, divide it evenly and give money to each individual, rather than giving the entire sum to the head mover and expecting it to be doled out equally. One type of tip to avoid: alcohol. It's usually illegal for movers to have bottles of alcohol in the truck or van, so tipping a bottle of wine or liquor could get them into trouble.
