I've been going to this restaurant because they have that hard to find authentic home style taste and they make tortillas fresh - on the spot - and they're so good you could eat them by themselves. Their menu is just right, having all the components that make up just about every dish you can think of - it's a small (hole in the wall) restaurant and at times you may have to wait 10 minutes, but it's worth it and you will see people waiting - why? Because honestly, there's almost no dish that is not good (and they serve menudo and cocido every day, even birria!) - and there are some that are just plain great. Before my mother passed away I would go to lunch with her all the time and she was a great cook, so she was as picky as the sun is hot - and more then 1/2 the time when I asked her where to? She'd say, with a smile on her face, 'Chispa!'....which made me happy to make her happy. I couldn't rate this any better, to impress my mom meant you took care in the details (to mom that was roasting fresh chiles, cooking on low heat when necessary, fresh ingredients, just the right amount of spices - never too salty or bland, salsas that let you know someone knows how to cook and consistant, consistant, consistant). And everyone there is friendly and they already know what I like -so I don't even have to say the whole dish (lengua en salsa de tomatillo con frijoles y arroz - THE BEST!) - I almost regret rating it cause that means I might have to wait longer....but my mom shared this place so can I. Take your parent(s) out to this little place...they'll want to go back and so will you.

The truly sad part of this restaurant is that my wife and I encountered some sick customer service while trying to make reservations on the phone. I…
After a fun visit to a nearby costume shop, our hungry group of 12 set out to find some good food to enjoy together before returning to the office. One of our group said that Loteria was a favorite of hers, so we trekked on over on her recommendation. I found the menu to be interesting - a variety of vegetarian selections (the one who recommended the place is a vegetarian) including a cactus salad and a succotash of zucchini and roasted corn to name a few. It was cool that there was something on the menu for everyone in our mixed bunch. I'm a big fan of carnitas myself, so I ordered a carnitas burrito. In addition to being super spicy - just the way I like it - the meat was tender and tasty, and the composition featured black beans instead of the refried variety. The burrito was also on the larger side. I could only finish half, but was delighted to have something to enjoy or share later on. The only downside to our visit was the service. We arrived before the lunch hour - around 11:30 or so - and were the only patrons in the place for at least the first 20 minutes of our time there. Yet table service was slow (i.e. bringing water to the table and taking drink orders), and one entree was completely forgotten about. Also requests for salsa, chips and other sides / condiments were either ignored or completely forgotten. Still the place is promising, has a nice atmosphere, and is a real find that's just a few blocks away from Hollywood & Highland.
Fun family environment and great food! We ordered Flame Burgers this time. Very juicy and delicious burgers on special buns. We also ordered 3 orders of fries and three baskets full of home-made fresh cut fries were served; two orders would have been enough for the 4 of us. The desert was excellent too, we ordered churros and a special ice cream that was rolled in delicious crispy flakes and served a soft fried sugary dough. Very happy with the quality of the food. Very clean and modern environment. When signing my credit card on the screen I was able to enter my cell phone number and a receipt was texted to me. Service was A+. The chef was going around between orders and asking if everyone was enjoying their meal. A few large-screen TV's, we watched the Dodgers game during our meal. Then the kids went to their play room and had the time of their life with video games, other electronic games, basketball hoops, Foosball, etc, while my wife and I sat in the beautiful balcony and relaxed. The kids wanted to do something special on a summer afternoon and this worked out perfectly. Two thumbs up!
With relatively inexpensive beers and decent sized tequila bar (larger then a chain, smaller then a true tequila bar), this is a fun place to drink. The food is decent, nothing to write home about. Lunch menu has very little to choose from whereas the dinner selection is slightly larger. Monday is $1 tacos where you can get mexico city style tacos with onions, cilantro, and meat. Plan to pay for chips and salsa though. The service is exceptionally friendly. Patio area looks at traffic and a demolished Spaghetti Factory building and is usually occupied with smokers. Interior is narrow but well lit for lunches and night is, well, like any other Hollywood bar at night. It's somewhat close to Pantages Theater, The Palladium and Amoeba Records but those are about as far as you would want to walk. The surrounding area is being rebuilt so there is potential for this place to get even more popular. All and all I suggest checking this place out if you want to drink.
I absolutely love this place, good atmosphere, good vibe, love one of the bartenders... And usually good service EXCEPT a waitress who didnt even acknowledge me til the bartender told her I was there, she asked what I wanted to drink I told her two margaritas. She got the drinks for me and my friend and that was it. She didn't help us for the rest of the night. Well I had I forgotten to write the total again after I wrote "0" for the tip (wasn't doing it to be mean but she didn't help AT ALL except to give the drinks I don't feel she deserved it) anyway when I checked my bank statement it said I was charged 26$.... 4$ more than my bill was!!!!! She tipped herself for no service! I am pissed!!! Not only is that wrong it's illegal, I wish I had gotten her name but I never saw her to even look at her name tag! So GO HERE for great margaritas and a good time but watch out for SHADY WAITRESSES!!
Tacos Baja Ensenada is the place to get some authentic Baja eats. I had the 2 Taco combo: (1) Fish Taco (1) Shrimp Taco, beans, rice, and a drink for about $6. Both the Fish Taco and Shrimp Taco are lightly battered and fried. They sit on top of two small corn tortillas and topped off with a little spicy sauce and cabbage. Finger licking good!!!! I also had the Mixed Seafood soup which is an awesome meal. It's loaded with Shrimp, Fish, Conch meat, Octopus, and more.... Truly one of the best soups I've had outside of being in Mexico. The service is quick and fast, and don't worry if you don't speak Spanish because the girl at the counter is very helpful and bilingual. The inside space is a bit small, but there is plenty of outdoor patio seating. The place looks newly painted and well maintained. We'll definitely be going again soon!
Love the shredded beef tacos, the tampico steak, and the flour tortillas. I also enjoyed their albondigas soup. I've been here countless times over the last 7 years at all times of the day. The staff is largely the same still, which is a good sign. I find it to be a nice, reliable place to meet up with friends, with something for everybody. They also constantly change the decorations for various holidays, making for a fun, festive atmosphere. Most recently, I was there for lunch on Halloween and the staff had dressed up in costumes. Wait can be a little long sometimes during peak dinner hours. Parking is mostly street parking, but I'll park across the street in the bank lot after the bank is closed. If you like "Jerry McGuire", this is the restaurant where Tom Cruise's character takes Renee Zellweger's character.
King Taco taco's are without a doubt the best deal for your money. They are small, a little greasey and mighty tastey. The salsa's are authentic. Not the watered down version or the homogenized version either. The carnitas are the BEST also. Some restaurants try to pass plain cooked pork as carnitas, but not this King Taco . This location cooks their carnitas right next door and even sells them by the pound at the adjacent panaderia. I will travel 20 miles just to buy these carnitas. This location was converted from a well established panaderia/ tortilleria into a King Taco some years back . I am so glad they still kept that portion of the business. One of the few King Tacos where you can buy your breakfast/lunch/dinner and also walk next door to get pan dulce(sweet bread) or dinner for the next day.
I dined here last weekend for a friend's birthday dinner. It's a very popular place in the Silver lake area and on the weekends it gets really crowded. Reservations recommended for sure. I had never been there before and although I enjoyed my meal, I probably would only go back if I was invited again to a friends birthday or something. I did like the inside of the restaurant. The lights were dimmed and the artwork throughout the restaurant was very cool. The food was good and the margaritas were typical for a Mexican restaurant. The service was good too. The only thing I really didn't like were the tortilla chips. They were super hard and I thought I might chip a tooth. That was disappointing because that's one of my favorite things about Mexican restaurants, good chips and salsa. Valet parking only.
There's a lot of competition for best Mexican food in this part of town, but CaCao Mexicatessen has quickly won its place as my favorite Mexican restaurant. The food is fresh, delicious, authentic and with two daily specials, there's a lot of variety. This place is also a rare haven for vegetarian Mexican food lovers. They have four kinds of veggie tacos, and last time I was there, both lunch specials were also vegetarian. Not to mention wonderful. There are lots of great places to eat in Eagle Rock, but we keep coming back here. Only problem is, it's already too popular, so it can be busy at lunch time. I can't wait to try their new breakfast items.
