Ankle Surgery
Drs. Richard Conti and Anghell, Schilling are all trained in advanced foot & ankle surgery. Their combined knowledge of reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery is impressive. They are uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat acquired, congenital, traumatic, neoplastic, and infectious abnormalities of the foot and ankle. Bunion surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis which means patients get to go home on the same day of the surgery. Many of our patients start walking on the operative foot within a few days and can return to work within a short period of time. It is our objective to get you back on your feet as soon possible.

Bunions are due primarily to genetic factors, but can become painful over time due to trauma, ill-fitting shoes and poor foot structure. What happens, is that the bone connected to the big toe starts to drift outward pushing the big toe sideways into the other toes which can also lead to painful hammertoes, corns and calluses. Bunions if left untreated, not only can become painful, but can become progressively worse. Although wider shoes, padding and custom orthotics may slow down this progression, surgery is the only way to correct the bunion deformity.

Treatment for ingrown toenails is performed by gently numbing the toe, and then removing the offending corner of the nail. If you have chronic ingrown toenails, we can remove the root in the office to permanently prevent re-growth of the ingrown portion of the nail. If you have an ingrown toenail, don't be afraid to schedule an appointment. Your treatment will be gentle and virtually painless, and we'll get you back to your normal activities right away.

Calluses
People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes. Causes of hammertoe include improperly fitting shoes and muscle imbalance.
Fungus
Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the nail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another. They include topical medications, oral medications, which can have some serious side effects; and the newest modality which is laser therapy.

Dr Nippert was given the Sports Medicine Award upon graduation from podiatric medical school and has maintained that interest in fitness and sports medicine ever since.
Physical Therapy
Initially, you will be non-weightbearing for approximately 3-5 days. At that time you will be re-evaluated in the office setting where the surgical dressings will be removed and the site will be inspected. Typically at this time the doctor will put a smaller dressing on the sites and allow you to get a shower. Additionally, you will be able to weight-bear to some degree with a removable walking cast. Instructions will be given on the daily care of the surgical sites as well as stretching exercises. Sutures are removed in two weeks and usually physical therapy is initiated.

Plantar Fasciitis
At our practice, Foot and Ankle Associates, LLP, we treat a lot of heel pain or plantar fasciitis. Many of the symptoms include pain when you first get up in the morning, burning, numbness and increased symptoms by the end of the day. The pain is usually caused by tightening of the plantar fascia ligament located on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia ligament supports the arch. When you're resting, the ligament contracts. As you start to walk, the ligament pulls and may tear slightly causing pain. Heel pain can also be brought on by trauma, over exertion, ill- fitting shoes or poor foot alignment.
