Carla Cavanagh, PA-C, LMT, joined Integrative Wellness in January, 2019, after shadowing for a number of months to be trained in modalities specific to the practice (namely allergy elimination and managing our weight loss protocol). Carla and her now adult daughter were also patients of the practice when her daughter was a child. Her background is a bit diverse. She recently retired from the Army National Guard as an aviation physician assistant and had been in the military for 40 years. She is a retired firefighter paramedic, and achieved licensure as a practical nurse (1993), physician assistant (1997) and massage therapist (1999) while continuing to work full time. While deployed in Iraq in 2009 she was driven to research alternative treatment modalities to treat her aviation population and began to study myofascial release, a connective tissue modality based in osteopathic principles. When she returned home she began to seek formal training in the modality and established her private massage practice in 2013 to concentrate on offering myofascial release exclusively.

Dr. Cheryl Hammes is a 1998 graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM). She is board certified in both Family Medicine (since 2001) and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (since 2005). She has been recognized as a Fellow and a Master Preceptor by the American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners (2023), as the OU-HCOM Family Medicine Preceptor of the year (2015), as an OU-HCOM graduating physician mentor (2017-2021), and won the state of Ohio Osteopathic Family Medicine Original Research Paper award in 2001. Her clinical research in 2001 focused on helping those with sinusitis to have less pain/pressure and runny nose symptoms with osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine (OCMM.)

Alanna Pylypiv knew she wanted to become a nurse practitioner while working with a NP in the mountains of Amachuma, Bolivia. She obtained her BSN at Kent State University and started working in the Emergency Department and Medical Intensive Care Unit at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. During that season she obtained her CEN and CCRN. In 2014 she became a licensed nurse practitioner and started her career in the Medical and Surgical Step-Down Unit at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. In 2015 she joined the team that launched University Hospitals Level 1 Trauma Center in 2016. Since 2015 she has dedicated 8 years of service to the Department of Trauma Surgery, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery. It was on this service that she got certified in ATLS, responded to trauma activations in the trauma bay, managed trauma/acute care surgery ICU and floor patients, helped establish the outpatient Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Clinic to care for pre and postoperative patients, and became a certified wound care practitioner. During those years she became an RNFA and initially worked in the OR first assisting at UH for trauma and acute care surgery but also at Cleveland Clinic Medina and Avon primarily for general, orthopedic, and plastic surgery cases. Starting in 2019 she served on the APP Council Education Committee as well as a lecturer for Fundamentals of Critical Care at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
Colonoscopy
I had taken her to gastroenterologist where she had a colonoscopy and was placed on an anti-spasmodic, then to a respiratory specialist who performed a bronchoscopy. She had scratch tests for allergies and placed on typical allergy meds. There was endless blood work which showed elevated levels for gluten intolerance and a type of anemia. She was re-vaccinated for pneumonia and recommended she be on a continual dosage of antibiotics and steroids to keep her system going.

Allergy symptoms are created by the immune system. Four different allergy pathways are described by traditional models. Most of us are familiar with the immediate allergic reactions known as type I - they include runny nose, asthma, hives or the most severe life threatening anaphylactic reactions. Type II reactions can produce low platelet counts and anemia – this type of hypersensitivity is rare and difficult to treat. Eczema sufferers often cope with type IV, delayed hypersensitivity reactions. The rash presents 2 days after exposure to the allergen and is known as contact dermatitis. Type III reactions are rare but are also severe, these are usually caused by antibiotics, especially penicillin. Reactions in the type II pathway have to do with disorders in the blood stream, like low platelets.Most of us know the common allergens. Dust, pollen and mold are severe environmental triggers that usually cause runny nose, itchy eyes and asthma symptoms. Food sensitivities like shellfish, peanuts, dairy and wheat can causediarrhea, abdominal bloating and even death for the most unfortunate. Energetically, allergens can be any substance and cause a variety of symptoms. Unfamiliar allergic reactions are irritable bowel syndrome caused by food allergies, migraines from foods or chemicals like perfume, seizures caused by wheat allergy or sunscreen, ADD produced by food allergy, simple lactose intolerance to bloody stools from dairy allergy.

When we first met Dr. Cheryl in the summer of 2012, our then 7 year old son Brannon was suffering from severe acid reflux and gastrointestinal problems. He was in constant pain, had a very limited diet, and poor sleeping habits. Brannon had been through an endoscopy and a stomach biopsy, and he had tried several acid reflux medications but nothing helped. Brannon was in severe pain on a daily basis. He cried for hours at a time and was unable to attend school most days. Dr. Cheryl immediately knew how to ease Brannon's pain. With a combination of supplements and allergy elimination treatments, she transformed Brannon's life, and she gave us back our healthy, happy boy. Brannon responded right away to treatment. He is now eating a wider variety of foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, and he is sleeping through the night. Most importantly, he is no longer in pain. Brannon is attending school regularly and is making great progress now that he is feeling better. He is also able to play outside without suffering from seasonal allergies thanks to Dr. Cheryl's treatments. We are so grateful to Dr. Cheryl for healing our son when no one else could. Early in 2022 she developed and took on the role of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery APP Educator. For the past several years she has studied alternative medicine for personal interest with the primary focus on thyroid disorders specifically hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s. This led to her starting a functional medicine program for master and doctorate prepared health care professionals. She became a certified functional medicine practitioner in April of 2023. “I was born with gastrointestinal issues, constantly crying (probably termed colic). I had a developing ulcer by age 16. I went through several endoscope’s and colonoscopys since early teens through 40 years old. I was put on the highest dose of Nexium humanly possible (4 per day) and many other medications over the years. My endoscopy results continued to worsen, inflamed stomach, G.E.R.D, to erosive gastritis. This can be one step away from Barrett’s esophagus, which is one stage away from esophageal cancer. I felt that I was doomed and wondered when I would get the esophageal cancer in my life. Not to mention the quality of my life was so poor. I had stomach bloating and discomfort, irritable bowel problems 4 times per week average. I was also on Xanax occasionally for depression and calming of the stomach to be able to stand it because it got so bad. The catalyst was my first daughter, Jessica, was born the same way in 1995. She was colicky too, cried all night and put on medication since infancy. She had a scope at age 6 weeks and blood in her stool by age 5. She was diagnosed with milk and wheat allergies and put on medications. None worked and by age 7 she had an endoscopes and colon scope showing acute gastritis, irritable bowel, etc. She was put on medications like me and the next step was a prescription for an antidepressant. That’s where I drew the line and started my own research. First I prayed fervently and had been praying with several others. I feel God lead me to the N.A.E.T. allergy elimination treatment. My brother told me about it from a seminar, and I researched it thoroughly. We went to Dr. Cheryl Hammes and it was a miracle. My daughter’s severe milk and wheat allergies were eliminated. As is the case with most, she had many other allergies, all of which we cleared after about 16 treatments. With Jessica’s good results, I then attended and took my other daughter (age 4) and my son at 8 months old, whom already had several allergies. Mine was a couple year process as I had much to undo. The other kids were about 12-14 treatments. My husband ended up going to for residual heart issues from a heart attack in 2004 at age 52. I came to Dr. Cheryl on the advice of a friend from my church. I had told her how desperate I was after going to doctor after doctor and my daughter was no better. Mackenzie was a Chinese adoption who, at seven months old weighed eight pounds, had pneumonia, and required a heart operation within a month of bringing her home. She had been plagued with pneumonias, respiratory infections, eczema, failure to thrive (weighing 38 pounds for almost 2 years), and finally at age 8 a viral infection which knocked her flat on her back.
