Sinusitis
We diagnose and treat a variety of nasal medical conditions including allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, turbinate hypertrophy, Acute and chronic sinusitis, nosebleeds, and much more.

Pediatric Care
Ear Infections
Children are at risk for chronically infected ears typically due to their anatomy not being fully developed. This can cause fluid to easily get trapped behind the ear drum and cause recurrent infections. It can also cause hearing loss because of the fluid. We have certified audiologists that will be able to test the child’s hearing. The hearing difficulties can cause speech and language delays, and educational delays. They can also have enlarged adenoid tissue (which sits in the way back of the nose). If ear infections go untreated it could cause permanent hearing loss or nerve damage. It can also lead to other complications both as a child and/or as an adult. Children with chronic ear infections typically require surgical intervention by a very simple procedure. Individuals may know the procedure as “Tubes”. The actual surgery is called bilateral myringotomy and tube placement. The surgery is very quick and painless post operatively. Occasionally, the adenoid tissue will be removed as well. Rarely, children may need more extensive surgery if they have developed a tumor (such as a cholesteatoma) in their ear or a large hole in the ear drum.

Emergency Care
In the event of any post-operative problems Monday through Friday, please call the office at 508-746-8977. After office hours, or on weekends, the answering service will direct, and forward you call to Dr. Durante or Dr. Patel. In the unlikely event that Dr. Durante or Dr. Patel are not immediately available for a post-operative problem, you will be directed to proceed to the Jordan Hospital Emergency Room. There, an emergency room physician will be available to see you, and provide initial evaluation. Dr. Durante or Dr. Patel will then be contacted. On rare occasions when neither Dr. Durante nor Dr. Patel are readily available, further ENT evaluation, and coverage will be provided by Tuft’s New England Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology.

Kidney Stones
Another state of the art procedure performed at Beth Israel Deaconess is minimally invasive radioguided parathyroidectomy (MIRP). This is for patients who suffer from hyperparathyroidism, a condition which leads to high calcium levels in the blood and can cause kidney stones, peptic ulcer disease, pathologic fractures and bone resorption. With MIRP, the patient receives an intravenous injection of technetium 99, a safe radioactive agent. The parathyroid adenoma absorbs more technetium 99 than the healthy glands, allowing the surgeon to locate it with a gamma probe inserted through a small incision in the neck. The probe picks up radioactive signals and leads the surgeon to the enlarged gland, which is then removed through the same incision. After surgery, patients rarely need pain medication, but they normally take calcium supplements for several days until the remaining glands regain normal function. Dr. Patel points out that with this new technology, removing an overactive parathyroid gland is quicker, less invasive and just as successful as the standard procedure. continues. “It encourages gentle dissection of the tissues and does not damage the healthy anatomy as is common with traditional instruments.” Greater safety for the patient is ensured as removal of tissues is more precise when compared to conventional instruments, and the total operating time is reduced. Quick healing usually follows this gentle surgical technique.
Endoscopy
Procedures may include nasal endoscopy/sinuscopy, nasal cauterization, and sinus dilations. Surgeries may include functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and reduction of nasal fractures.

Mental Health
Dr. Jennifer Robinson is a licensed mental health counselor located in Pembroke, MA. She has specialized training in working with individuals who have endured various forms of trauma, including medical trauma. Jennifer utilizes a variety of treatment modalities, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that involves eye movements and/or tapping to reprocess negative memories into non-distressing memories. EMDR has been shown to be effective in decreasing the distress associated with tinnitus and other medical related disorders.

When healthy, happy and handsome 24-year-old Ryan Anderson of Plymouth smiles at you today, his entire face beams. But in early 2000, while we were celebrating the dawn of the new millennium, Ryan was receiving very scary news from Dr. Bernard Durante, Chief of Surgery at Jordan Hospital. An MRI showed a large juvenile angiofibroma tumor – a rare type of tumor with an occurrence of 1 case in 4,000 – which was lodged down in the nasal passage behind the left side of his face, and growing dangerously and aggressively in his skull base and down toward his spinal column.
Computed Tomography
Screens on both sides of the operating table showed pictures of glistening pink and red membranes inside Steffy’s nose. Another screen displayed cross-sections of her skull in four quadrants, derived from CT-scans taken earlier. Durante would use the diagrams to help place the balloon in the right spot.

Ear Surgery
Mastoidectomy is an operation used to remove disease from bone behind the ear when medical management is inadequate. There need not be excessive drainage or ear pain for mastoid disease to exist. Sometimes a mastoidectomy is required in order to gain better exposure to the middle ear, and an area over the middle ear called the attic.

Botox
Voice restoration surgery is commonly applied for a variety of vocal problems ranging from spasmodic conditions of the voice box (larynx) to reconstruction after treatment for laryngeal cancers. Botox injections are commonly performed in the office and usually provide months of relief for patients suffering from spasmodic dysphonia of the larynx. For patients suffering from paralysis of one or both vocal cords injection and or Trans oral techniques may be employed to restore the voice or the airway. Open reconstructive techniques can also be use to alter the frame work of the larynx in selected patients when necessary. More recently long term management of unilateral vocal cord paralysis can be accomplished with nerve reconstruction to improve tone in the paralyzed cord.
