SOUTH MIAMI, FL. – One the last American-style, western-theme restaurants in the city, Shorty’s BBQ continues to spice the palates of locals and travelers alike. I had 48-hours left in Miami and I couldn’t leave without tasting that famous homemade BBQ sauce of theirs.I went cruising down South Dixie Highway at high noon, when I saw their iconic flagship store with its bright red neon lights that read “SHORTY’S.” Just then, I flashed back in time. Edward Louis “Shorty” Allen, who started the business back in 1951 from a barbecue stand, passed away in 2013 at the age of 104 (Woah!) But he left a legacy that it is unique to South Florida and its community.I parked my car, went in and sat down. “I’ll have the beef brisket, ma’am – with ice tea” I said. When I tried it was a bit heavy on the pepper seasoning, but overall an excellent choice.Aside from their nostalgic décor, the true star of the restaurant is their slow cooked baby back ribs with that famous sauce only found at Shorty’s. Other items on the menu include the beef spare ribs, chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, brisket, and of course their delicious coleslaw which is always chock full of celery salt which gives it a great tasted and creaminess at the same time. The corn on the cob is sweet, perfectly cooked and drenched in butter – the way it’s meant to be eaten. Seated quickly on a Saturday night at 7:45pm which was both a good sign and bad sign. Why is there no one here? Andrea, our awesome server, approached us quickly and was very attentive throughout the entire dining experience. We started with a pitcher of a specialty brew which was my favorite item of the entire meal. Our appetizer arrived promptly which was the recommended nachos.. Awesome! Wish it was a little more hearty but great regardless. Our main courses outside of the crawfish were horrible. My blackened catfish po boy was disgusting. No amount of salt or bbq sauce could make this edible. Being hungry, and being inthebiz, I washed it down with beer, as well as the twice cooked and burnt sweet potato fries. We tried the shrimp which we were very excited about and quickly decided to bring it home and season it ourselves (we are hoping the back of the house forgot to season this dish, and it normally isn't served as bland). Second time coming here, first time was a miss on both service and food. This time at least we are happy to report that we had a great server, kudos to you Andrea. I just hope everyone ackwnlowdges that you don't cook the food, and to tip you according to service, not food quality. We are not planning on giving this place a third shot, unless it is strictly to make a stop by the bar, since the neighboring establishments are always slammed. This place is excellent and it's close to home. We called ahead with a party of 21-ish and they had our tables ready. The staff was great they didn't mind we took over one section of the dinning area. We came for our company party and we ordered the corn nuggets wings and tons of samplers . The rest of the group decided to order by the pound and it turned out perfect . The brisket is tasty and baby ribs are my favorite. Make sure you get the pulled pork it's juicy . For dessert the group brought a cake and the servers helped us cutting it their service feels like youre at home. I bought my two girls so I ordered them Oreo pie and it was even better than our cake . So make room for dessert. Great place wonderful staff and excellent food. Try it for yourself .
The Pit BBQ is the only Restaurant in Miami that cooks with plain wood. Its been a Landmark for 50 years. You are going to experience the OLD FLORIDA charm and THE BBQ RIBS in South Florida not to mention GATOR BITES, GATOR RIBS< GATOR BURGERS and GATOR SAUSAGES. Yes is the end of the TRAIL and the beginning of the Everglades. You can enjoy an Airboat ride or go gamble at the Casino and stop at THE PIT BBQ for the BEST LUNCH or DINNER!!
Came in to watch the game and had delicious food with friends and family. Prices are affordable. Service super friendly like we are family.we go once even twice a week I must say the baby back RIBS I would highly recommend wings for starters and the brisket or pulled pork. You will not be disappointed :) worth the drive !!
Unlike the other review, we LOVE this restaurant, even more than Texas De Brazil. The meat is excellent quality, the service is impeccable, great ambiance, quaint restaurant. Do not be fooled by it being in an office complex or by the negative reviews. Brazaviva rocks.
Love this place ! If you love BBQ- this is the place to be, nice atmosphere, and great service. The place may not look family friendly but it is if you eat outdoors.
Food was horrible, service was even worse. Wait times are ridiculous. DO NOT GO THERE. This place needs new management.
