Dry eyes are associated with collagen-vascular diseases such as Sjogrenâ€™s disease, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Many therapeutic drugs including antihistamines, oral contraceptives, and beta-blockers contribute. Environmental factors such as heat, wind, smoke, and low humidity also play a role in symptoms. Specific activities can cause dry eyes which include prolonged computer use, reading, or drivings since the eyelids blink less frequently. As a result, fewer tears get delivered to all areas of the eye.

Macular Degeneration
One of the most commonly expressed concerns from patients is the fear of developing age-related macular degeneration. This concern is justified, as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of permanent vision loss in people 60 years of age or older.Â Â The exact cause of AMD isn’t known, although it’s more common in people with a family history. Cataract Surgery
Most health insurances cover cataract surgery with a single focus lens implant under medical outpatient benefits. However, health insurances do not cover astigmatism correction or Lifestyle lens implants such as: Toric IOLs, LRI procedures, Symfony IOLs, ReSTOR IOLs, Tecnis Multi-Focal IOLs, and Crystalens IOLs. Patients who elect to correct their astigmatism and/or improve their range of vision will pay the difference in cost for these life-changing options.

Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery can affect the eye itself, and there is a risk of developing dry eye following eyelid surgery due to decreased blink strength or incomplete eyelid closure. An eye surgeon who has experience with managing issues such as these can take additional measures pre- and post-operatively to reduce the risk of dry eye complications or promptly address them should they occur.
Blepharoplasty
Skin can lose its elasticity with age, causing the upper eyelid skin to sag.
