Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a collection of diseases that all have a final common effect. That effect is damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve is a large nerve that exits from and attaches to the back of the eyeball. It is like a cable that takes the information from the eyeball to the brain. When damage occurs from glaucoma to the optic nerve, vision is lost. Typically, people lose vision above, below and slightly nasal to the center of vision.

Macular Degeneration
ForeseeHome is intended for use in the detection and characterization of central and paracentral metamorphopsia (visual distortion) in patients with age-related macular degeneration as an aid in monitoring progression of disease factors causing metamorphopsia including, but not limited to choroidal neovascularization (CNV). It is intended to be used at home for patients with stable fixation. ForeseeHome is not intended to diagnose; diagnosis is the responsibility of the prescribing eye-care professional.
Laser Eye Surgery
Our optometrists are licensed to prescribe medications and offer medical treatment for common eye problems and certain chronic eye diseases. Certain eye diseases will require treatment and/or management by an ophthalmologist, in which case your optometrist will refer you to a colleague who specializes in treating or managing your condition. Your optometrist may participate in your pre- and post-operative care if you have eye surgery performed by an ophthalmologist. In many cases, your optometrist and ophthalmologist will work as a team to provide you with the best possible care.

Eye Exam
It is important to have routine eye exams to screen for potential eye disorders, even if you believe you can see well. Many eye diseases start without a noticeable change in vision and are detected at a routine eye exam. After conducting a thorough ocular health assessment, your optometrist will recommend any necessary treatment or management, along with how frequently you should have your eyes rechecked. This routine eye examination can be compared to the routine physical you have done with your PCP.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diseases of the retina vary greatly – from common and easily resolved to those that are quite difficult to diagnose and treat. Advanced training in all retinal diseases, as well as the sophisticated equipment at our facilities, such as lasers, digital imaging technology and optical coherence tomography (OCT), provide Virginia Eye Institute specialists with the methods of detecting and treating retinal problems. We offer the latest treatments for retinal disorders, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and detached or torn retina. Virginia Eye Institute retina specialists have been involved in a number of ground breaking clinical research trials that have lead to the development of many modern treatments for ophthalmic disease.

Radiation Therapy
Physical Injuries: Commonly called traumatic cataracts. A blow to the eye, great heat or cold, chemical injury, exposure to radiation (usually associated with radiation therapy for cancer patients), and other injuries can lead to cataract formation.

General Surgery
Mohs Surgery
Dr. Langelier is awesome. My dermatologist performed Mohs surgery on me on 11/14/18, but she didn’t feel comfortable doing the reconstructive surgery because of how close it was to my eye, so she recommended Dr. Langelier. Thank God she did. Dr. Langelier did the reconstructive surgery the following morning and did a fantastic job. I had all my doctor friends look at her work and they were unbelievably complimentary. On top of her surgical skills, Dr. Langelier is incredibly nice and engaging.
Reconstructive Surgery
VEI surgeons perform thousands of procedures in our surgery center every year, including cataract and premium intraocular lens (IOL) implant surgery, LASIK and refractive surgery, glaucoma treatment, vitreoretinal procedures, treatment of corneal disorders and corneal transplants, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, as well as pediatric and adult strabismus surgery.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Other procedures such as tissue fillers and Botox require even less downtime and can be performed in our offices. Juvederm and Restylane are excellent for filling age lines around the mouth and eyes. Botox helps to flatten wrinkles around the eyes or forehead caused by grinning or frowning.
Eyelid Surgery
Dr. Langelier is awesome. Her surgical skills are top notch. She is also a kind, compassionate physician who cares deeply for a successful outcome for her patients. I trusted her implicitly as she performed my delicate eyelid surgery. Following her directions for the do’s and don’ts of post-op care resulted in a most minimal amount of swelling and bruising. In fact, everything was pretty much healed in one weeks time and she lifted all restrictions. I strongly urge anyone who needs ophthalmologic treatments to seek out Dr. Langelier. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.
Plastic Surgery
Reconstructive procedures for age-related changes and drooping eyelids are also offered at VEI. Additionally, we can provide repair of skin cancers, tearing problems, and traumatic injuries around the eyes.
Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery to rejuvenate the appearance of your upper or lower eyelids is called blepharoplasty. This affordable procedure removes the excess fatty tissue around your eyes that causes an aged, tired appearance. Leaving no obvious scars, the tiny incisions are hidden in the natural folds of your eyelids. In some cases, the surgery can be performed without a skin incision. Sagging or furrowed eyebrows and cheeks may also contribute to a tired appearance and can be repaired in conjunction with blepharoplasty.
Cosmetic Surgery
Today, our board-certified ophthalmologists and optometrists continue to provide Virginians with state-of-the-art comprehensive medical and surgical eye care as well as optical services.
