Moving takes a lot of planning, and that includes knowing what your moving rights are. Read on to find more about your moving rights and what you can do to prepare.
We've put together a small list to get you started on your journey -- and the first step starts with a single box.
I had these movers about 3 years ago. At first they seemed good.. sowed up on time, were nice and seem to know what they were doing. We were to pay for climate control storage($2400 a month) which we did. They were to deliver... then they told us it would be another $8000 to deliver all this while my husband was dying of cancer! We we unwrapped things were broken and mildewed..... I would never recommend them which is a shame as we trusted them at a difficult time in our lives
They didn't deliver an expensive porcelain column my mom had from Italy. The woman who answers the phone is rude and likes to throw an attitude, but if you give it right back she changes her tune, until the next time you talk to her, then it's right back. There were scratches on my mom's furniture/tv and they were supposed to give her a senior discount, but didn't. My mom didn't make a fuss about all their screw ups, all she cared about was getting her missing column. The woman kept insisting the man brought the box with the piece into the house. My mom moved into an apartment and the piece was too big/heavy to be put into a box so the rude woman bagged herself on that. Not to mention, the last time I called the number listed for their business, 884-2355, at 2:30 pm on 11/22/16, the rude woman answered and when I said something needed to be done about the missing piece, a man in the background (turns out it was the owner) threw a hissy fit about not being in the office and that they were home, why is she calling, I talked to Louis and he said he brought the box in (again, it wasn't in a box). What kind of moving business doesn't have someone "in the office" on a weekday at 2:30 in the afternoon? Bottom line, they refused to do anything about the missing piece and they have no customer service or business acumen. So time to give BBB a call.
This is the second time I have moved with Lawton. Just like last time everything went smoothly. The crew was polite efficient, hardworking and even had a sense of humor. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a top notch moving company.

They were polite, very respectable of mine and my wives belonging, and worked very hard. They worked a full day and never slowed down. The crew that moved me was on time, polite and catered to all my needs. The men were aware of my situation (divorce) and made a very difficult situation easier with their pleasant attitudes. My move was exceptionally difficult because of my large Furniture and small stairway. The crew wrapped everything and were extremely careful with not only my Furniture but the stairway. At the end of my job all charges were explained to me and they made sure everything was in its place and that I was satisfied with the job. I would highly recommend Lawton moving to anyone looking for an efficient and pleasant moving company.
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!! They are the WORST! HORRIBLE! I will be filing a complaint with the better business bureau! DO NOT hire or contract this moving company. First, it supposedly took the company almost 40 minutes to drive 2.4 miles (which I was charged for). I understand it was raining but it does not take 40 minutes to drive 2.4 miles in the worst conditions. Then, I prepaid 3 hours for 3 men and only two showed up. The manager/owner gave me this sob story about how two of his employees were in a car accident and couldn’t come to work (which was a lie because I overheard one of the movers saying that they called out bc they didn’t want to work), but miraculously, about an hour later a third man showed up. So while I was trying to clear this situation time was running on my dime and no one was doing anything (another 30-35 minutes wasted). Since I only prepaid for 3 hours, they only wanted to work for that time. They said they had another job scheduled at 11:00 and had to go. THAT’S NOT MY PROBLEM. I paid them to move me not to tell me you only paid three hours. We can’t take this we can’t take that. Long story short, they worked for a total of about an hour and 15 mins and only moved my bedroom set! I PAID almost $400.00 to have a bedroom set moved about a mile. They also ruined the ceiling at my new place, ruined my neighbors sprinkler. I was furious. I called demanding to speak to some, but could not get anyone to listen to my complaint. I was refunded a measly $40.00. Moving is hard enough and they made my experience horrifying. So I paid for an almost 40 minute “joy-ride) another 30 to 35 minutes of back and forth because they can’t get their story strait. I paid for 2 men the first hour (and only one worked for about 10-15 mins of that hour and brought down bed railings). And for 3 men the next two hours and only 2 worked. After all of this, I had to hire another company to move me and pay $350.00 to have them move me. a moving company should never tell anyone we don’t have time we can’t take this. I was told it was a two hour minimum and any extra time would be more. I was fine with that. I wasn’t fine with being told you only paid 3 hours and we have another job so we can’t take your stuff. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are dishonest, unprofessional, and just the worst company ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was lucky enough to have this company move me on June 28. Rick and Nick were the original movers and Ted assisted them later. My congratulations to all three workers for an excellent job. They were on time, polite, very respectabe of all my belongings and they worked very hard.They only took one five minute break. I will always recommend this company to anyone that is relocating. They did a wonderful job.

That's because the movers are technically transferring items between state lines, which means they'll be responsible for having the correct licensing and insurance in place.
Long-distance moves are much more complicated to plan, typically requiring you to pay numerous extra expenses for everything from shipping items to renting storage space.

For both local and long-distance moving companies, AMSA is another good place to check out a company's legitimacy. Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.

The subject of tipping is relatively unclear when it comes to movers. However, there is a general rule of thumb that most people in the industry agree on: Tip your movers if they've done a good job and you think a tip is warranted.
Generally, a 5 percent tip is considered appropriate, though some people recommend paying $20 per day, per mover for basic, local moves. However, almost everyone agrees you should first do a quick walk-through of your home to check for any damage to your furniture or belongings and to make sure everything is where you'd like it to be.
If you do decide to give a tip, divide it evenly and give money to each individual, rather than giving the entire sum to the head mover and expecting it to be doled out equally. One type of tip to avoid: alcohol. It's usually illegal for movers to have bottles of alcohol in the truck or van, so tipping a bottle of wine or liquor could get them into trouble.
