I have been coloring my hair for over 10 years and have bounced around between different stylists and salons for a while since moving to NYC 4 years ago. I had heard good things about this salon and had wanted to try it out. My experience this past Saturday was everything I hoped for and more. They were able to accommodate me with a same day appointment. The reception staff were friendly and the place gives a warm, peaceful vibe. My stylist Leann listened to what I wanted and thoughtfully answered any questions I had. I loved my high lites and I even got a complementary blow-out since it was my first time which I was surprised and very grateful for. The blow-out was the best I have ever gotten and I got a ton of complements that evening. The woman who shampoo'ed my hair was kind and gave the best scalp massage! The prices were reasonable but the service and product was exceptional. I will definitely be going back

Well, everything seemed ideal upon coming to Institu... Jenna was nice- as was Clarissa. Together they did a good job on cut and color. After both were finished I was not given a blow-dry but I didn't mind too much, still felt good about the place.
Then I got to the register and the total was about $400!!! The cut and color were good, no doubt, but $400 good? NO WAY! When I got home I took a look at the service fees and still can't figure out how $$$ it got...
So beware! They tag on odd costs that you dont know pre-visit. They girls are very talented but the price is outrageous!

I went to Insitu to get my hair cut and it was an amazing experience just like everyone else on this site stated. All of the Hair Stylists were very pleasant and they make you feel as comfortable as possible. I went to donate my hair to wigs for kids and Jenna was the lady who cut my hair. I asked that she cut my hair like tony stark in the movie ""Iron Man"" and when the job was done i was so happy my words were all jumbled up and i couldn't stop saying how superior Jenna's hair cutting Techniques were. The haircut was free for the hair donation but if i had money that day i would've payed full price because now i look like a movie star!!! The Environment was very peaceful and i have no complaints. Jenna is simply amazing in what she does and i will go to her from now on. I never like getting haircuts but insitu is not just a haircut place it is a spritual place to help you find a new you... Anybody can cut hair but not everyone can make you look like a star!! Thank you soo much jenna and if your reading this just know that every word i just typed is my honest opinion and now i feel more confident then ever. This was my best hair cutting Experience ever! Thanks again!

After the longest day ever, I walked in for a quick haircut, hoping that I wouldn't be turned down. Thankfully, the last errand to cross off my list ended up brightening my day considerably. I walked into a warm reception, my coat was hung, I consulted with my haistylist (Jenna) and I received the best shampoo ever, My day began to fade way. Jenna coaxed me into a style change that I have received nothing but compliments on. I adore the calm setting and warmth of the salon. I suggest their services to everyone. In all, the neighborhood, view, staff, quality and professionalism will keep me coming.

I had a very unpleasant experience at Insitu last fall. When I made the appointment I asked for a Level 2 designer ($100), but when I went to the appointment I received a Level 3 designer ($85.) I made the appointment for Sat afternoon, and the salon was almost empty. While the stylist was friendly, I think she did a very poor job cutting my hair. Also my hair is very thick and very straight, so my haircuts take about an hour and a half. The whole time she was cutting my hair, she put my wet heavy hair in front of my face, instead of clipping it up. Every other haircut I've had, the stylist will twist my hair and pin it up to cut the bottom layers, but no she put my wet hair in front of my face! I could barely breath and definately couldn't see! Who wants wet hair in their face for an hour. Also I'm pretty sure Paula was right next to me cutting someone else's hair. She should have said something to my stylist, Jenna. Then half-way through the haircut her friends came by and started waiting for her. So we ended the appointment with my hair slightly damp and a poor styling job. The stylist told the receptionist to only charge be $50, so I was fine with it. If I can save money, no need for a complete blow-out. The hair cut also grew out badly, and I needed another one a month later. BUT a couple days later, they call back and ask for the rest of the money, and charged by credit card for $35 more dollars.
So I had to pay the full price for the haircut, got a less experienced stylist that I had requested when making the appointment, had to sit for an hour with wet hair on my face (it gets hot under all my hair), and didn't get a complete blowout.
Maybe Paula and the Level 1 designers are better, but don't get Level 3 at Insitu.

I have long, extremely thick, wavy hair. When most stylists touch it their first reaction is ""oh my god"". When that happens, I'm usually about to get a haircut I hate. Until I found Insitu on the Naturally Curly website, getting a haircut was a chore, something I just had to deal with. I was never happy with the results and the stylists were often clueless on what to do. On my first appointment with Paula, I knew that this was someone I was going to stick with. She is a genuine, friendly and warm person and her aura sets the tone for the entire salon. There is no attitude. Everyone is made to feel welcome. She takes the time to do my hair right and shows compassion and understanding for my many hair woes.
Paula also did the ISO Mane Tamer process on my hair. To anyone who is thinking about it, I highly recommend it. I don't have any damage, dryness or breaking. My hair was pretty straight the first week after the process, but eventually the natural wave started to come back, which is exactly what I wanted. The most gratifying result is that the Mane Tamer removed the ridiculous amount of body from my curls. No more big hair. I was nervous at first, but now I can't imagine why I waited so long. I have about two inches of growth now and my hair is still pretty straight. Depending on how long your hair is, it will take several hours, so sit back and enjoy the view of Irving Place.

My colorist and Stylist is LeeAnn. She is the sweetest, most talented person that i've ever let touch my hair. She takes time to have a full consultation with you before she starts and actually does what you ask! Insitu is such a wonderful atmosphere and makes your experience so relaxing and enjoyable. You are not just another number at this salon! they don't rush you or pressure you to purchase anything. And best of all you never have to wait! LeeAnn always makes me feel wonderful and the compliments that I get from people are endless! I reccomend all of my friends to her.

I had my first appointment here after a couple of friends recommended it and I'll definitely be going back. Koti cut and styled my hair and did a fantastic job. He really listened to what I wanted and then explained what he was going to do. And he's a hoot to chat with. The salon is large and bright and all the staff where very friendly. Although it was a little more than I've paid in the past I definitely felt like it was worth it for the cut and service I got. After almost 2 years in NYC it's such a relief to find somewhere I trust and enjoy visiting!

After spending so many years getting a ""haircut"" I've finally graduated to getting my hair cut/styled with Paula at Insitu. After looking around and wasting money on services I wasn't happy with, I came across Insitu. It's a local place around the corner and it is a very relaxing environment. Paula knows exactly what to do with my hair to keep it comfortable, manageable, and stylish.

After 6 years of dedication to my beloved hairdresser in Chicago, I moved to NYC and struggled to find a replacement. Having paid up to $250 to find this person at the top rated salons in NYC (including Roy Teeluck), I was thrilled to find Paula. She is truly talented and one of a kind. Not only has she given me the best hair I've ever had, she is a treat to talk to. She and her staff are professional, kind and are the most unpretentious and genuine people I've met in a salon. The shop resides on the most tranquil block in the city and those qualites pervade through the salon's windowed walls. I will never have anyone aside from Paula cut my hair -- I get at least 2 compliments a week! She is a gem.

I am a cousin of Kristen's and decided to go to her hair salon. I had Kristen and Paula for highlights and a haircut. It was the best service I ever had and I have never had sooooo many people compliment me on my hair. They are a seriously talented duo and I cannot wait to go back!!!!

I've been wanting to donate my hair to locks of love and found this salon on citysearch, and I will definitely be going back. Everyone was so nice and talkative, even the salon owner was around and he helped in some of the handling of my hair, which made me feel a little bit like a superstar for a day. Koti did my cut and he was fantastic, he gave me a great style and was just the sweetest hairdresser I have ever had, I would go back for the people in there alone. The view out the windows is also very enjoyable, it's like a little retreat, and I noticed after a few minutes just how relaxed I was. I've had some bad hair salon experiences in the past in this city so I'm very relieved to have found this place! I can't wait for my hair to need its next cut :)

Going here is going to meet up with a bunch of old friends to lounge around and chat while getting primped. Everyone gets along so well and is so sweet, you will feel as if you have known them forever when you walk out of there. Michelle who does color is a very warm and talented person who in my 3 years of living in NYC just gave me the best color I have ever received. Try them and you won't be running back to B&B or Cutler again in the future.

I went for the ""Locks of Love"" donation, wherein a client donates atleast 10"" for a FREE haircut.I personally think having that program in their salon is a great way to advertise their expertise. But it's also a great example how confident they are with their skills for giving a haircut FREE and styles it very well in detail. The atmostphere is just how it was described, ""A sunlit environment filled with peace and creativity, this holistic-minded salon was created to nuture the client's body, mind and spirit."".The atmostphere is just beautiful.I fell inlove, not only with the artistic person who cut my hair, Koti. But I also fell inlove with the entire environment!Koti, was a whole different part of my experience. He's very entertaining, beautiful person and vibrant, as well.
Most importantly, I've never walked out of a salon feeling confident and extremely satisfied w/ my haircut.
