Overall

Loaders showed up 10 minutes early and did a great job with our 2 bedroom house. Could not have been a smoother move, including the Penske rental. SML kept in touch to confirm and re-confirm right up to and including the move day, and were always a phone call away to answer questions. The price was extremely reasonable. Highly recommended!

SML set us up with a great crew in Lubbock. They were very flexible when we encountered delays due to a broken down moving truck. The crew was quick, efficient, and well-equipped. They even brought an extra person and everyone was extremely friendly.

SML saved my life moving my father across the country. I couldn't have done it without them. Coordinating the move from long distance was very challenging, but SML made the loading/unloading part simple.

They did show up on time but without a dolly; we had to run down to the local Penske place to get one for them to use. They worked hard and helped us load our car onto the trailer and hook up to our truck which we appreciated. When we got to our new place, we found out they used none of the blankets we gave them to protect our furniture. The movers here found them in a heap in the front of the truck; we had damage to our furniture. Also found that instead of putting a wet outdoor rug on the back on the floor they threw it up on top of our furniture and our couch cushion was wet from it. Would probably not use them again, but will use someone else and supervise. I felt I didn't have to, because they were advertised as "professional" movers. Not the best experience in the end.

Horrible experience! Movers did not show up leaving my family and I in a bad spot! Do not use this company if you expect any sort of reliability! If you do decide to use SML, be sure you have your friends on standby, because they may not show and leave you to deal with everything by yourself!

I called SML back in February to get information and pricing about their services. I was pleased with what I was told and called them earlier last week to book two "Helpers" for a move that was taking place last Friday. Whenever I first called, I was told that I was not able to book any "Helpers" after noon (this was contrary to what I was told over the phone when I initially called for information). I explained to the CSR that my father was flying in at noon and I had to pick him up at the airport so I need the "Helpers" there after noon. She then told me she would check on it; then later told me the latest she could schedule was noon because she didn't like to send them out any later. I got off the phone with her to discuss my options with my family and later we called back. We got a different CSR this time and she had absolutely no issues booking us two helpers at 2pm. She told us to allow for an hour travel time so they should arrive between 2pm and 3pm.

Friday afternoon rolls around and 2pm comes and goes... followed by 3pm... still no "Helpers!" At 3:20pm we called SML to let them know that our "Helpers" had still not arrived; the CSR told us that she would have to call a different branch to find out where they were and she would call us back. 4pm rolls around and we have still yet to hear anything back from SML on the status of our "Helpers;" so we call them back. They tell us they still don't know where our "Helpers" are and they are looking for someone else to send our way. When asked what time we should expect them they told us they did not know. At this point point it was two hours after our scheduled time and we still had no helper or any idea what time or even if we would be able to expect them. SML refunded our money, however, not having the help that we were depending on left my father and I to do all the moving by ourselves. We could have scheduled some friends to help us move but instead we told them we had it covered since were hiring "Helpers" through SML. Big mistake!

SML Unload-Chicago

The movers where very nice but unfortunately showed up 40 minutes late (although they did call to tell me they were runnig late).

The movers could have worked faster. I was moving into an apartment in Chicago, where you need to reserve the freight elevator in advance and make reservation time was 3 hours. They were supposed to start at 9am but didn't start until 9:50am. This would not have been a big deal since they had two hours to unload a small 16 foot, 2/3rds full truck. Unfortunately because they moved slowly they ran over an hour (and took the allotted 3 hour time I was paying them for). This caused problems with the next person who had reserved elevator for a move out at 12pm. Needless to say, the management/maintenance and other tenant of our building were not happy that we went over the allotted reservation time.

Not the way I wanted to introduce myself to my new apartment neighbors and management.

We had a generally great experience. More so at the end of the move that the beginning. The men on both ends were on time, polite and helpful, Both teams worked tirelessly only stopping to get their breath. The loading crew could use a little more training. Their lack of using packing blankets provided, ended in a couple of damaged Items. plus their knowledge of loading a truck needs refinement.

The unloading crew was equally on time, polite, and seemingly quite knowledgeable. They were helpful and quite fast at their job, a credit to their company. Only problem was the lead man was a little to talkative, Making my wife a bit uncomfortable. All in all a good experiance

Overall

Such a horrible customer service experience with SML I moved from Texas to Indiana with my seven-months pregnant wife, so we used SML to help load and unload a small amount of our belongings that we'd need for our temporary housing. The guys who loaded were fine. On time, quick and clean. No concerns.

On the other end, our one-hour window came and went with no sign of the movers. We called toward the end of the hour and were told they were on the way, 10-15 minutes...20 minutes later, we called again...and again 30 minutes after the end of the window and another few times until they finally arrived 2.5 hours late! We asked the women in the call center what could be done to compensate us for our lost time/canceled appointments and they said they'd address it once we got the bill.

Well, the bill came about six days later, so we called again. They had to check with management, called back (left a message for my wife) and offered to waive their own 10% processing fee -- which they somehow determined was adequate. So I called back the same day and told them it was not adequate. Here's where the run-around began...as if we already hadn't been running around with these folks.

Once I was back on the phone with them that day, I was told that they couldn't do more without a manager's approval and they'd call back. A week later and no call back, I called again. I was told that in order to do more, they'd need to gather statements from the movers to "get the entire story." The story was their associates were 2.5 hours late for an hourly job...but I said fine with another promise of a returned call.

Another 11 days passed with no return call. I call them again and repeat the situation to another person, who tells me that they don't have any reports and that only a manager can do more and give me the guy's name. The say he's out of the office for the holiday and will call me back. Does he call? Of course not.

Another week passes and I call, asking specifically for the guy who was supposed to call me back. I should have known that he wasn't really prepared to do anything about the situation -- after all, he'd been putting it off for a month now. I finally get this guy on the line and explain it again and he says, I can give you 10 percent.

After going around and around with this guy - who was trying to convince me that he was doing me some sort of favor by waiving their "travel fee" (which is for the folks who were 2.5 hours late) along with the "processing fee" - I just asked him to shoot straight. Was he going to do anything substantive or not? I wasn't even asking for a free ride. In fact, I told him I wasn't and that I would pay for the service, but the full amount was unreasonable to request based on the circumstances. Not surprisingly, the answer was "No." He was not willing to reduce the actual fee for the move one cent. Not after I spent my time waiting for their associates, calling repeatedly and being brushed off for a month. His answer was to rationalize and dismiss. I'd recommend finding another moving company.

Overall

I had a very mixed -- but generally poor -- experience with SML ProMovers. My biggest complaint is about the subcontracted ProMovers in Baton Rouge.

Pick-Up: While I was contacted by SML two days ahead, the subcontracted movers (ABBA Movers) did not call until 9:30pm the night before my 8am move. (I understand this is not SML's fault directly, but since they were the contracting company, the blame also falls on them.) ABBA instructed me that night to bring additional supplies that I was not able to get before the pick-up time of 8am. At pick-up, I had two young movers in sweats who spent a chunk of the spent time on the clock on their phones texting and talking with friends. All but 5 boxes and furniture were ready to go, so this was not downtime, but rather wasted time. This was frustrating as I had to pay for an extra hour since they were not able to get everything in the truck within the three hours allotted. Had I had the requested materials due to proper notice and had the movers not spent so much time on their phones, I believe it would have kept the total time under 3 hours and saved me $95. I have a hard time imagining that they were bonded and insurance as promised. Also frustrating was the fact that I had to go into the truck multiple times during the drive to resecure items that they poorly fastened, like my motorcycle, despite the fact that I provided ample tie-downs and straps. Luckily no damage occurred there. The same cannot be said for my couch that ended up with laundry detergent all over it due to poor securing and no furniture pad wrapping by the crew. Very disappointed with the Baton Rouge side of the move. I plan to report ABBA's service to the BBB.

Unload: I had a much better experience unloading with the contracted ProMovers from Pick Up and Go Movers. They arrived on time and were professionally dressed. They were very efficient and unloaded the entire truck in under two hours. Unfortunately, they did break a bookcase unloading but referred me to their company to pay for damages since they said SML would not cover this. Waiting to see what comes of the claim. Overall a better class act than ABBA Movers.

Great experience. I contacted them through Penske rental. They showed up on time and ready to work. I had a 26' truck packed to the ceiling. Not only did they unload in a professional manner; but, helped us organize the storage facility to maximize space. They were done in 1 1/2 hours.

Terrible Experience

I book movers to unload. Two nice individuals showed up and tried hard to unload the furniture, etc. from our move. It was apparent after two hours this was not going well, in the third hour got worse. Called SML too late to send anyone else out. The unloading took 5 hours and should have taken three. This was with my husband, son and I doing much of the work. I left concerns three times with SML and no one has had the courtesy to talk to me about my concern and it has been over a week. I did talk with someone just answering phones, not customer claims and they said: we are aware of your concerns and I will be called back once they know what "angle" are going to take. I don't know what that means, but I have been charged for services that were woefully inadequate.

I have used Simple Moving Labor several times (in Indiana, South Carolina, Michigan). The unload in Lansing Michigan was terrible. They took 4 hours for a job that should have been 2 to no more than 3 hours. They uninvitedly operated my Comcast remote control to change the input source. They were slow and did not move a box springs that could have fit down the stairs if they were more capable.

SML damaged my furniture upon loading our truck, their two "Professional" movers were actually one senior citizen and a college kid (first day on the job) I filed a complaint and they made me take 3 photos of each item damaged, fill out paperworks with lists and explanations, dates of purchase, etc... I had to use photoshop to number each photo and sequence it to my explanation and definitions (nightmare) before they would review it! Today, 3 weeks later, I got a letter stating that the damage happened on the drive to our destination, they're not responsible, thank you :) ... BS! I saw it happen! Do not use them. I paid extra for the professional, licensed, insured movers and this is what I got!

Dana was fantastic and able to send me two men to unload a 16-foot truck with only a day's notice. The movers were polite, helpful, extremely neat and careful - particularly with our antique furniture. A very good decision!

The helpers were enough!

We chose to use the helpers for our load and unload. They worked just fine. However, be very specific when you tell the operator that you will be on the 3rdfloor. For the unload we got two older, out of shape gentlemen. Sml did give us an extra hr for free though.

The two "Helper" crew that unload the 26' Penske truck for us here in Mankato, MN were GREAT. We only gave a couple days notice but they got a crew ready for us. The temperature ranged from -6 to +13 Fahrenheit but they unloaded without a complaint.

I used their helpers to load up my rental truck in Albuquerque and unload in New York. Everything was arranged with only a weeks notice. At both sites the men were on time and worked hard. They were friendly and helpful. The office called to make sure the men had arrived and checked on how things went at the end. Overall it was a positive experience and i would use them again. The only downside was the cost, the fees the company charged are a bit pricey. Six months ago i hired a local moving company with 2 professional movers (they provided the truck) and paid the same price to load and unload, for the same number of total hours as the Simple Moving Labor helpers.
