About Village Fabric Shoppe The building that houses the Village Fabric Shoppe was originally built to house the post office here in Red Hook. After that it was home to a cabinet and coffin maker. It has been involved with fabric from that point on. The casket linings were the first upholstery to take place on the premises. We have officially been The Village Fabric Shoppe since 1981, When the alterations and formal wear business went retail. Over the years there has been more and more interest in quilt making and the merchandise has reflected this. In the Early nineties the lawyers offices that were in the storefront next door moved and the Village Fabric Shoppe expanded its retail space to add a well lit classroom and more retail space. The upholstery section had room to expand at this point as well. In 2005, the present owner took over. Diana Louie has brought a new perspective to the shoppe. Her Art Background and lifetime interest in textile work has flavored the selection and course offerings. She holds a bachelors from Parson's School of Design in Painting and Education, and Masters from Hofstra University in Interdisciplinary Studies. Her Thesis was written on the Dyes and Pigments used in the Late Middle Ages. She was an art Teacher in Massapequa Public Schools for ten years before her husband's work brought them to Red Hook. She is a longtime active member of several quilt and embroidery guilds, ( visit our links page ) and has exhibited both art forms locally and nationally. In several cases she has earned awards for her original works. There are a number of new programs at the shoppe that Diana has begun. First is the Saturday Special. This is a weekly sale, every Saturday there is a special offer or percent off on an item of interest. Very often it is a special item needed for an upcoming class or workshop, either at the Shoppe or for one of the local guilds. Also popular is the Free Project Sheet. These change monthly and most are originals created by Diana especially for the Shoppe. They are often seasonal. One of our most popular is the Annual Red Work ornament pattern issued every November. Kits for this are available. Once the month is over, the free project sheet is retired. The free project sheet is only available in person at the shoppe. We have also initiated several clubs that meet monthly. The Club scene is an active and fun way to get involved if the more project oriented workshops are not your style. We have a Crazy Quilt Club, Handstitchers Club, and Blockbusters, an Art group dedicated to developing personal creativity. Each year in January we begin a new block of the month See our events schedule or link to our blog for up to the minute information on these activities.
