Miss Mags was hit by a car on 5/1/14 and was rushed to IVS with life threatening injuries consisting of a broken rib, punctured lung, internal bleeding and fractured teeth. I honestly did not expect her to survive the trip. We called ahead and we're met at the door and they took her to the back. 2-1/2 days later she came home. She's a little slow but already barking at the mailman and pizza guy. Unbelievable. Thanks to everyone at IVS for everything you did to keep Miss Mags as a resident of Des Moines. I am glad we chose to bring her there.

Vaccination
Blood type will have to be established and usually takes about ten minutes after the initial blood draw. Universal donor for dogs is A-. If the dog is A- and you, the owner, agree to have your dog donate blood every 8 to 12 weeks, we will perform a comprehensive physical examination and further blood tests at no cost. A complete physical is performed, a blood sample is collected and current vaccination history, deworming and heartworm preventative is verified. The other biochemistry results performed to confirm normal kidney, liver and endocrine function, heartworm should be available in 3 to 5 days. A report is sent to your family veterinarian to update your dog's medical records.
Behavioral Counseling
Do not inadvertently reinforce or reward negative behavior changes. For example, if a pet learns that anxious pacing results in repeated invitations to join its owner for a snuggle on the forbidden couch, it may be more likely to continue the anxious behavior. Instead of reinforcing unwanted behaviors, owners should provide their pets with positive reinforcement, such as attention and affection, when their pets are behaving in desirable ways.

Iowa Veterinary Specialties is a full- service, emergency and specialty hospital providing a broad range of services including emergency, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, exotics, acupuncture, and palliative care services. We do not provide preventive or routine services. Preventative and routine care is provided by your daytime/ referring veterinarian. For emergency visits, if you are able to call to alert us, please do so as it allows us to prepare for your pet's arrival. Specialty services such as Surgery and Internal Medicine may be scheduled through your day-time veterinarian. We treat dogs, cats, and some of our doctors will see pocket pets (small mammals such as rabbits and gerbils). We do not treat large (farm) animals or wild animals. All patients seen through our Emergency department are seen on a triage basis (most serious cases first). We are forbidden by law to dispense or prescribe medication without performing a physical exam. Initial emergency visits are $97.50 and estimates will be provided after that point by the treating doctor.

Iowa Veterinary Specialties is proud to offer end-of-life care and pain management through our Hospice & Palliative Care department. The department will now allow Iowa Veterinary Specialties the opportunity to provide more comprehensive and compassionate care to pets suffering from life-limiting illnesses. The Hospice & Palliative Care department will be utilizing the latest in integrative medicine (a combination of alternative and Western medicines) in order to better serve your pets during this difficult transition.

Wahly is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy who came in to IVS because he was lethargic and not wanting to eat. His bloodwork showed that he had elevated kidney values, which can be an indicator of leptospirosis, among other things, so a blood sample was sent out to be tested. It returned positive.

Raisin and grape toxicity can cause poor appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Even a very small amount can be harmful for your dog.

Jake is a very sweet, 13 year-old, golden retriever who has survived multiple surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy for several different tumors. Jake is a testament to the resilience of dogs and continues to live a happy life because of his owners’ commendable commitment to his well-being. He continues to fight another day and the members of the IVS internal medicine, surgery, and oncology service are all closely watching his recovery and further treatment.

Dr. Heather Quinn is originally from Green Bay, WI area and graduated from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. She has a strong interest in abdominal ultrasound, internal medicine and wound management. When not working, she enjoys time with her two Labradors (Wally and Leidner) and anything outdoors especially traveling, hiking and water sports.

Iowa Veterinary Specialties provides a wide range of surgical services should surgery be necessary, including emergency surgery when needed. Below is a list of surgeries that can be provided.
Small Animal Surgery
Dr. Kenzig attended The Ohio State University for both her undergraduate education and veterinary school and received her DVM in 2013. She then completed a rotating internship at University of Missouri in 2014 and a small animal surgical residency at Mississippi State University in 2017. After residency, she spent four years as a private practice surgeon in Ohio. She is board-certified in small animal surgery as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Kenzig is well-versed in soft tissue, orthopedic, and neurosurgical procedures. She is particularly interested in minimally invasive procedures (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and arthroscopy) and is experienced in performing TPLOs for treatment of cranial cruciate ligament disease in all sizes of dogs. In her spare time, Dr. Kenzig spends time with her husband, fellow ISU/IVS surgeon Dr. Andy Law, their two dogs, cat, and chinchilla.
Spaying and Neutering
Your regular veterinarian however should treat an illness that is routine or non emergent. Services such as vaccinations, worming, neutering, are not performed at Iowa Veterinary Specialties.

Path." Iowa Veterinary Specialties will pick up your patient’s sample, and deliver to Iowa State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory or Clinical Pathology Laboratory. This service is provided at no extra cost to your practice.
