Dental Examination
If your general dentist has given you a written referral or x-rays, please remember to bring them with you to your appointment. Your first visit will be a comprehensive examination with the necessary diagnostic x-rays, if not provided, as well as information provided by your dentist, so that your situation can be thoroughly evaluated and the ideal treatment plan can be determined.
X-rays
Wisdom teeth should be evaluated during the mid to late teen years due to their likelihood of developing problems. At Capitol Center for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we will perform a complete oral examination and take specialized dental X-rays to determine the positioning of the wisdom teeth and search for current or likely future issues. Early evaluation and removal, if appropriate, can dramatically boost your future oral health.

Alexa joined our CCOMS team in March 2018. Prior to joining our practice, she worked as an orthodontic assistant for 5 years. Alexa holds certifications in Radiation safety, infection control, nitrous oxide, sealants and earned her DAANCE certification in March 2019. Fillings
Crowns
ITero® Scanners, located in both offices, allow for impression free fabrication of implant crowns. This is a great technology that alleviates the need for impressions and saves appointment time by the oral surgeon taking the impression with a scan and then sending the file via email to the dentist lab of choice and then the dentist receives the completed crown that is placed at the next appointment.
Bridges
If you are missing three or more teeth in a row, an implant supported bridge may be right for you. While a traditional dental bridge requires the natural teeth at each end to be shaved down and prepared to receive crowns, an implant supported bridge is anchored to an implant at each end. This leaves the adjacent teeth undisturbed, reducing the risk for future damage or decay.

Root Canal Treatment
Lasers have several uses for dental surgery. Some common types of dental laser surgery include but are not limited to: dental cavities, root canals, gum surgery, dental abscess, biopsy, and treatment of lesions.
Apicoectomy
An apicoectomy is a root tip surgery. This procedure is performed to remove a tooth’s root tip to prevent further infection of the root. First, a small incision is made in the gum and bone over the tooth’s root. After the root tip is accessed, it is cleaned and sealed with a small filling. The gum is then stitched back into place.

Dentures
All removable appliances, including partial dentures, flippers and full dentures, must be checked for proper fit before they can be worn.

Dental Implants
Dental implants have become the gold standard to replace missing or failing teeth. Despite popular myths, they are not prone to failure. In fact, the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) states that, when placed by a specialist, dental implants have a success rate of 95%.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Some pain, bleeding, swelling, and seeping are normal following oral surgery. Please do not try to view the site by pulling on your lip and do not probe the area with your tongue or fingers. If you experience excessive bleeding or discomfort after 48-72 hours, please call our office immediately.
Jaw Surgery
Orthognathic surgery can involve procedures such as an osteotomy (bone cutting), bone grafts, or distraction osteogenesis (stretching of the bone) and orthodontic (braces) care. Orthognathic correction is conducted in stages, and the course of treatment can last from a few months to a year or more.

Tooth Extractions
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a growth factor, is a mixed gel that can be applied directly into tooth sockets and other sites. The use of PRP in tooth sockets after tooth extractions is capable of improving soft tissue healing and positively influencing bone regeneration.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting is the replacement or enhancement of bone around teeth. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone collapses. Bone grafting is performed to reverse bone loss or enhance existing bone. The grafting material can be taken from parts of the body or from synthetic material. Bone grafting allows for proper support of dental implants or prostheses.

Orthodontics
Impacted wisdom and cuspid (or canine) teeth are fairly common. To correct impacted teeth, there are a few treatment options. For impacted wisdom teeth, the most common procedure is extraction. For impacted canine teeth, several treatment modalities are available. Orthodontics (braces) can be used to open space for proper eruption. Primary (baby) teeth can either be extracted or surgically exposed to allow for the placement of an orthodontic bracket to help align the teeth.
Braces
Additional surgeries are needed to improve the appearance of the lip and nose, close the opening between the mouth and nose, help breathing, and stabilize and realign the jaw. Once the permanent teeth grow in, braces are often needed to straighten the teeth.
