Arthritis
Bacteria can be found in the TMJ. This is true of chlamydia infections. There is a higher incidence of joint inflammation and muscle pain in patients diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect the TMJ.

What can be done? This is all about treatment options. These become very clear when the cause is understood. The most common treatment is through targeted manual, hands on techniques to the neck. This may also include a recommendation to another professional such as your dentist, family practice physician or neurologist. In our experience these referrals have already occurred and if your symptoms continue an underlying cause is more likely.

Ultrasound
Chronic shoulder pain has a common finding for every shoulder problem, a shoulder dyskinesia. Your arm does not track normally with the shoulder blade. Diagnostic ultrasound is a quick way to see if your rotator cuff is torn or injured. Stretches can sometimes cause more strain but here are a few exercises that will help improve your shoulder motion.
MRI
We may want to have a sleep study conducted at home. A 3D imaging study gives us a lot of information about your airway, your TMJ’s, neck and sinuses, and more. A repeat MRI or a hearing or ear pressure test may be ordered. This is your part of the evaluation process. Once you have completed these tests then the second part of your evaluation can happen.
X-Rays

Whiplash
Vision changes with headaches are very common. An eye muscle, the superior oblique, is commonly associated with headache pain and can contribute to neck tension. Optometry evaluations are typically normal or unchanged. Symptoms to look for: eye strain, pain behind the eye, blurred or double vision, eye fatigue and even some balance issues. Also common are depth perception and driving issues as well as difficulty with grocery stores. These tests can be positive following a head injury, post-concussive syndrome diagnosis, whiplash, or with headaches.

Jim attended the University of Wisconsin for his undergraduate degree in Molecular biology where he chose the field of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery as a comprehensive medical and surgical discipline. His training was was completed at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic where his desire for academic excellence and patient centered care was fulfilled. A back injury cut his surgical career short in 2018, but he has remained committed to medicine in various capacities, not the least of which is his exciting affiliation with Joel Rauser and Jono and The Headache Center.

Hope is a big word at CornerStone Physical Therapy. This word was given to us through our clients and has become a part of our mission, ‘creating hope.’ Through this beginning the Hope Initiative was started. This project has included our t-shirts that encourage us to have hope. Why we have a hope day and why our t-shirts turn pink during the month of October. It includes the CornerStone Coffee Company and how it connects us with a story in another country and the hope every cup gives to children with disabilities. It is why our business is called ‘cornerstone’, Ephesians 2:20. As CornerStone Physical Therapy grows we have hope that the Hope Initiative will also.
Shoulder Pain
Ankle Sprain
There are many forms of treatments for TMJ issues such as the use of a dental splint or appliance from your dentist. This is like putting on an ankle brace for an ankle sprain. A dental splint will change how your teeth together and hopefully reduce some of the stress of your jaw. Dental splints can also make your problem worse as well if not fitted appropriately or if there has not been a clear diagnosis made before the dental splint. A properly fitted dental splint requires a dentist to fabricate this for you. Over the counter splints rarely work. Other treatments are oral surgery. This is rare and should be used as a last resort.

Manual Therapy
Treat the joint limitations that can exist in the glenohumeral joint, shoulder blade or scapula, rib cage and even the spine including the neck. We do this through specific joint manipulation techniques.
TMJ Dysfunction
Great question! We all have two temporomandibular or jaw joints, TMJ’s. TMD simply means temporomandibular disorder. This suggests that you have a problem with your TMJ. To be honest when you have a TMJ problem you typically know it and that is why you are seeking dental or medical help. Adding the word ‘disorder’ does not help us understand or treat why a person is having a problem with their jaw. It does say this joint has a problem though.

Ankle Sprain
The most common ankle sprain is an inversion ankle sprain. This is where you roll your ankle inward. Swelling can be significant and ligament tears as well as joint injuries, even fractures can occur. Thankfully most ankle injuries are a joint sprain to the lateral malleolus or distal tibio-fibular joint. Cornerstone shows you how to assess your injured ankle and things you can do to treat an ankle sprain.
Plantar Fasciitis
At Cornerstone Physical Therapy we treat a variety of conditions from plantar fasciitis to headaches and TMJ or Temporomandibular Disorders. We have successfully treated pelvic issues post-delivery after a pregnancy and helped many athletes achieve full function and ROM after a knee surgery. Our staff has received sports medicine, manual therapy and craniofacial certifications. Manual therapy is the hands-on assessment and evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries of the entire body. A Cranio-facial certification is specific to problems of the head, neck, face and jaw. There are only a handful of Cranio-facial Certified Physical Therapists in the country.
