Kumon Math and Reading Center

Our good friend back in Cambridge, MA had mentioned Kumon to us as a way to build the strongest of strong math and reading foundations for our child without giving the fundamentals short shrift as we moved ahead in parallel to new math and reading heights. After moving across the country, I had yet to explore Kumon but it was on my short list. One day, while out grocery shopping, my daughter asked me to come and look in the window at something that looked really exciting. It was the Woodland Hills Kumon Center! We learned more!

While seeds had certainly been planted before enrolling (our friend in MA and my daughter's own interest), it was the Center Director, Ms. Barbara Lee's articulate clarity, passion for the Kumon method and experience as well as her promise of vigor, rigor and child-centered learning that convinced us that enrolling was the right move. Since that time, I have been impressed by our daughter's consistently positive experience and high regard for Kumon, Ms. Lee and her team. Our daughter has also blossomed in terms of her overall maturity as she takes increased responsibility for ensuring that her work is complete and accurate. This positive regard for Kumon has persisted for over a year even as she has received important constructive feedback about her challenge areas.

Perhaps this is all a sign of a strong Center Director leading a strong team. We have not experienced another Kumon Center anywhere but I suspect this may be the case. I am consistently impressed by the balance the Ms. Lee and the Kumon team strike between gentle respect for each child's pacing and positive encouragement for each student to perform at their very best as they face inevitable challenges or burn-out. I am impressed by the orderliness of a center catering to so many diverse families and so many children with their own strengths, challenges and resulting needs. I am in awe of Ms. Lee's ability to keep her finger on the pulse of where each child is with regard to these. In my view, this is truly a testimony to her dedication to each child's success.

This journey towards success for her involves hard work, lots of "pencil pushing" and putting children first. Ms. Lee is very serious about building confidence in each child and not skipping steps. I love this about her and truly believe she is an outstanding education expert in her important areas of expertise. I appreciate her respectful and direct style because she is so incredibly sincere, invested, experienced and well-informed. Ms. Lee doesn't shy away from telling me what she feels our daughter needs to be successful when she is and also when she isn't getting that. She helps us to tweak whatever isn't working and celebrate what is to ensure our daughter's peak experience. Ms. Lee is generous with her time and thoughtfulness fielding our questions and any critical feedback we may have about the Kumon experience. We course correct whatever isn't working and again, celebrate what is. This is a big breath of fresh air. We are very grateful.

My two children have been attending Kumon for the past 3 years. One child went from among the lowest 5 to top 5 in his class, in two years. It was a lot of work for him, but my kid works hard to make mommy proud.

I didn't know I'd have to be so involved in my child's learning process but I love it. It gives me time to bond with my kids. Home grading is vital to your child's success in the Kumon program and isn't as hard as you may think. Ms. Lee, the director, will provide you with Kumon answer books if you want to do home grading. Home grading provides immediate feedback so my kids know where their strengths and weaknesses are.

I have a very busy schedule and I work full time, but the time I spend with my kids reviewing Kumon is priceless and I recommend this place to all. Ms. Lee is excellent and takes each individual student's learning to heart.
