Overall, there is no clear evidence that environmental factors, such as cell phones, cause these tumors. The rising incidence of vestibular schwannomas likely relates to improvements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and increased screening for concerning symptoms.

Computed Tomography
X-rays or CT scans of the sinuses are not necessary to diagnose uncomplicated sinusitis if you have the symptoms of sinusitis (discharge plus pressure or blockage). If your doctor suspects a complication or if you have repeated episodes or prolonged sinus symptoms, a CT scan of your sinuses may be needed.
Chemotherapy
Medication side effects —A variety of medications can cause taste issues. Common ones include angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as lisinopril or captopril; antibiotics such as amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole; diuretics such as acetazolamide and hydrochlorathiazide; and chemotherapy agents, such as bleomycin and carbo/cisplatin.
Radiation Therapy
CPM and UES dysfunction occur for varying reasons. It may result as a side effect of the normal aging process or due to changes in the CPM or nerve signaling pathways. Specifically, muscle enlargement (called hypertrophy), scarring of the muscle (called fibrosis) from radiation therapy or trauma, stroke, and reflux (heartburn) can all damage the swallowing mechanism at the UES.
Radiation Oncology
Management of vestibular schwannomas centers around three different options: observation with repeated imaging, radiation, and surgery. The decision is complex and must account for tumor size, hearing status, symptoms, patient health, patient preference, and physician preference. Weighing these factors requires a thorough discussion with your ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or otolaryngologist, and often referral to additional specialists in neurotology, neurosurgery, and/or radiation-oncology.

He received his bachelor degree in microbiology from Brigham Young University and his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethseda, MD. He performed an internship at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and completed a residency in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI.

Botox
There are numerous treatment options that can substantially improve CPM dysfunction, including dilatation (stretching), oral medications, BOTOX® injection, and myotomy (cutting). Dilatation procedures are generally not permanent and allow for a trial period to see whether a treatment will be helpful. These can be done either with mild or no sedation, or under general anesthesia.
Rhinoplasty
The time required for the septoplasty operation averages about one- to one-and-a-half hours, depending on the type of deformity. It can be done with a local or a general anesthetic, usually on an outpatient basis. During the surgery, badly deviated portions of the septum may be removed entirely, or they may be readjusted and reinserted into the nose. Surgery may be combined with a rhinoplasty that changes the outward shape of the nose; in this case swelling and bruising may occur. Septoplasty may also be combined with sinus surgery.

Skin Cancer
Skin: Cancers of the skin can occur to any portion of the head and neck skin, but are most commonly found on the sun exposed portions of the head and neck. The cheeks, nose, ears, neck and lips are common sites for this kind of cancer. The most common types of skin cancer include Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Melanoma, and Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Skin cancers are commonly associated with significant sun exposure in the past, and can even vary by the color of your skin.
Cyst
Ulcer
Options for treatment include lifestyle and dietary modifications (see below), medications, and rarely surgery. Medications that can be prescribed include antacids, ulcer medications, proton pump inhibitors, and foam barrier medications. To be effective, these medications are usually prescribed for at least one month, and may be tapered off later after symptoms are controlled. For some patients, it can take two to three months of taking medication(s) to see effects.
Eczema
Irrigation or ear syringing is commonly used for cleaning and can be performed by a physician or at home using a commercially available irrigation kit. Common solutions used for syringing include water and saline, which should be warmed to body temperature to prevent dizziness. Ear syringing is most effective when water, saline, or wax dissolving drops are put in the ear canal 15 to 30 minutes before treatment. Caution is advised to avoid having your ears irrigated if you have diabetes, a hole in the eardrum (perforation), tube in the eardrum, skin problems such as eczema in the ear canal or a weakened immune system.
Fungus
To evaluate you for swimmer’s ear, your doctor will look for redness and swelling in your ear canal, and ask if you are experiencing any pain. Your doctor may also take a sample of any abnormal fluid or discharge in your ear (ear culture) to test for the presence of bacteria or fungus if you have recurrent or severe infections.
Lesions
Bony lesions —These are non-cancerous growths of bone in the ear canal often linked with cold water swimming.

Physical Therapy
Labyrinthitis is a self-limiting illness that usually gets better in several weeks. Symptom can begin suddenly and gradually worsen over the course of hours to days before improvement is noticed. Failure to seek treatment may put patients at higher risk for permanent hearing loss and imbalance. Although uncommon, it is possible to have some permanent hearing loss despite treatment. While most patients with imbalance and mild dizziness with head movement recover, sometimes it may take months to years to fully recover. Patients with substantial balance issues may benefit from physical therapy, specifically vestibular physical therapy.
Neck Pain
TMJ Dysfunction
In adults, common causes of earaches include otitis externa or swimmer’s ear and TMJ dysfunction. Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the ear canal and results from swimming in contaminated water or as a result of cotton swab use. In people with diabetes, otitis externa can spread far beyond the ear canal and can be life threatening. Therefore, prompt treatment with antibiotic ear drops as well as cleaning of the ear canal with specialized tools available to an ENT specialist is critical. Another common cause of ear pain is due to referred pain from the jaw joint. This is usually due to grinding of teeth during sleep. TMJ pain can be treated with ibuprofen, eating softer food, avoiding chewing gum, and using a night guard.

Treating turbinate hypertrophy depends on the specific cause. First, discuss your symptoms with your primary care physician or an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or otolaryngologist. They will examine your nose and may recommend additional tests, such as allergy testing or X-rays, depending on your specific diagnosis.
