General Info

The Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, located in Welch, Minn., began commercial operations in 1973. The plant is owned by Xcel Energy and operated by the Nuclear Management Company. It houses two pressurized water reactors with a capacity of more than 1,000 megawatts. The Nuclear Management Company undertakes emergency planning services and offers an online guide that includes information on emergency evacuation, sheltering and steps on prevention of radiology contamination. The Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant has received the highest performance rating from the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
