Cataracts
The lens is the clear structure located behind the pupil. Its primary function is to provide fine-tuning for focusing and reading. The lens performs this function by altering its shape to become thinner or thicker as necessary. Between the ages of 40 and 50, the lens becomes less flexible and presbyopia sets in. As people reach their 60's or 70's, the lens sometimes becomes cloudy and hard (cataract formation), preventing light from entering the eye.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. There are also some new and exciting cataract implants which can restore vision at both far and near following cataract surgery.

Vision benefit plans are a supplement to your health insurance. These plans provide a material benefit to use towards eyeglasses or contact lenses and often also cover a "routine" eye examination. You do not need to have a vision benefit plan to have a "routine" eye examination as many insurers include this as a benefit as well.
