Following graduation from podiatric medical school, the foot and ankle surgeon enters a post-graduate residency in podiatric medicine and surgery approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. These residencies are similar to, and are often integrated with, residencies for MDs and DOs, and provide training in general medicine, general surgery, and surgical specialties. The critical difference is the higher volume of cases and time focused on the foot and ankle in residency programs for podiatric surgeons. Currently, the majority of podiatric residency programs are three years in length.

If over-the-counter treatments don’t take care of your fungal infection, it’s time to come in to see us. We can prescribe medication to help relieve your symptoms and treat the fungus. The most common medication prescribed is oral antifungal medications, which are usually taken for about 6 to 12 weeks. Even if the fungus is effectively treated, you won’t see results until the nail has fully grown out clear, which may take a couple months.

Diabetic foot problems can quickly become serious if not treated quickly, especially if your diabetes leads to nerve damage in your legs and feet. The two most common problems we treat are Diabetic Neuropathy and Peripheral Vascular Disease. If you suffer from diabetic neuropathy, you may not feel heat, cold, or pain. This lack of sensory can result in wounds being left untreated, which could lead to infection or internal bleeding. Peripheral vascular disease that affects blood flow. Without proper blood flow to your feet, it will take injuries longer to heal. If you have a foot infection that will not heal, you are at risk for developing a diabetic foot ulcer or worse, gangrene.
