Dental Examination
To thoroughly assess the tooth and the type of extraction required, we perform a comprehensive examination and take digital radiographs as indicated. Extractions are typically categorized as either "simple" or "surgical extractions."
X-rays
Preventive, regular dental cleanings are an integral part of the check-up visits. Chief concerns should be brought to the attention of your hygienist upon arrival and appropriate dental x-rays will be exposed, evaluated, and discussed. We use the most advanced digital x-ray equipment to provide a safe and efficient experience for our patients. Your hygienist will remove all bacteria- harboring plaque and tartar buildup from along the gumline and between the teeth which may have been missed by brushing and flossing. This time spent also represents an important opportunity for hygiene education of home care methods that will maintain and protect your healthy smile for years to come. A final detailed polishing of the teeth will leave your mouth feeling fresh and clean long after your dental visit.
Oral Cancer Screening
A thorough examination will be performed of your dentition and oral soft tissues as well as external supporting areas of the head and neck, including TMJ(jaw joints). These regular screenings will allow us to vigilantly monitor any development of common dental conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease and additionally less common oral symptoms which may evidence a deeper systemic issue. Externally, swollen glands or lymph nodes may be a signal of an active or chronic infection that requires further attention. TMD(temporomandibular dysfunction) is a relatively common condition and has a variety of causes and possible solutions which should be discussed with your Dentist and Dental Hygienist. Often it is related to clenching, grinding (bruxing) of the teeth and some causes may include misalignment of your bite (occlusion), obstructive sleep apnea, or simply an increase in stress. Treatment planning may include referral to correct one or more underlying causes or if no treatable underlying causes are noted a Nightguard will likely be recommended to preserve the integrity of the teeth and jaw joints. A final and vital component of these bi-annual exams is the oral cancer screening. As your dental professionals we are charged with detecting suspicious oral lesions as we have more access than most patients’ physicians. If a lesion is detected a follow up visit will be scheduled to ensure that the lesion has resolved.

Teeth Cleaning
Because it's vital to see what's going on below the surface, we'll take digital radiographs as needed, to check for the presence of any cavities, or infection and to evaluate the position of your child's developing teeth and the health of jaw bone. We'll also perform a professional dental cleaning to eliminate any plaque or debris that has accumulated between the teeth or in hard to reach places.
Fluoride Treatment
Cavities develop when plaque is not consistently removed from around the teeth and gums. Due to inadequate oral hygiene practices and dietary habits, children are especially prone to developing cavities. As an added level of protection against tooth decay in children, our office typically recommends periodic fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
Dental Sealants
After your child's permanent molars and premolars come into place, we typically recommend the placement of dental sealants. As an ultra-thin, clear coating that is painlessly applied to the biting surfaces and grooves on the back teeth, dental sealants block the bacteria and acids that cause decay.
Space Maintainers
Sometimes, due to tooth decay or a traumatic injury, a child may lose a primary tooth early, before the permanent one underneath is ready to come into place. When this happens, our dentist will consider the best way to hold the space left by the baby tooth in order to maintain a clear path for the succeeding adult tooth. Sometimes a small dental appliance, known as a space maintainer, is required to make sure the permanent tooth does not become crowded out of the dental arch or impacted by shifting adjacent teeth.

Fillings
According to archaeological findings, for as long as dental problems have existed, there have been efforts to provide emergency and restorative care. In fact, attempts to place dental fillings have been found in the skeletal remains of people who lived around the year 8000 BC. However, it wasn't until thousands and thousands of years later, in the 19th century, that a variety of metal fillings, including dental amalgam, appeared on the scene. Although gold achieved status as a popular restorative material, it was soon apparent that amalgam fillings, consisting of a mixture of mercury and an alloy composed of silver, tin, and copper, offered a less expensive, durable, and simpler alternative.
Resin Composite
Today, it’s possible to restore a tooth with decay with cosmetically pleasing and metal-free filling materials composed of composite resin and filler particles that form a hard matrix when set. Strong and durable, these fillings bond to the remaining tooth structure as they rebuild it following the removal of any decayed or damaged portions. Best of all, with tooth-colored fillings, there’s no unsightly metal showing. Your smile looks naturally pleasing whether you’re opening your mouth or simply flashing a broad smile.

Crowns
Following the preparation of the involved teeth, it's not unusual to experience some sensitivity and gum soreness. This discomfort typically subsides. However, since the fit of a temporary restoration is often less precise than the final permanent crown or bridge, you may still feel some residual sensitivity until treatment is completed.
Bridges

A bonding procedure is typically performed with composite resins, which come in a wide array of tooth-colored shades to enhance the look of your smile blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. Bonded to the underlying tooth structure, composite resins are made of biologically safe and metal-free materials that offer excellent aesthetics, strength, and durability.

Root Canal Treatment
If you are told that a tooth requires a root canal procedure, there’s no need for alarm. Today, a root canal procedure is as routine and comfortable as receiving a dental filling. As a matter of fact, a root canal procedure is typically the best way to relieve toothache pain, save a damaged tooth, and preserve your natural smile.
Apicoectomy
With a success rate that exceeds 95%, root canal therapy remains the most effective procedure to save a tooth in which the inner vital tissues have been damaged. However, as with all healthcare procedures, there are a small percentage of cases where the teeth become symptomatic a second time. The good news is that many of these teeth can still be saved with root canal retreatment or a minor surgical procedure known as an apicoectomy.

Periodontal Surgery
When gum disease has advanced beyond the initial stage, periodontal surgery is often recommended to effectively remove bacteria and tartar from around the teeth, reduce gingival pocket depth, restore lost tissue as possible, and halt disease progression. It’s essential to keep in mind that gum disease is a progressive condition. If appropriate measures are not taken, gum disease continues to compromise the support of the teeth and have consequences to one’s overall dental health and well-being.

Overdentures
An overdenture is a type of complete denture that receives added stability and support from special attachments that are secured to the remaining underlying teeth or specialized dental implants.

Upon graduation in 1991, he has practiced periodontics exclusively with his father, Anthony Gargiulo, D.D.S. and Peter Roberson, D.D.S. Their practice in Chicago, Illinois is limited to periodontics and dental implant surgery.

Oral Surgery
Dr. Michael Mora graduated from Loyola University of Chicago, Magna Cum Laude, with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1979, and then obtained his dental degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1983. Dr. Mike completed a General Practice Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital after dental school where he gained extensive experience in Oral Surgery and Endodontics. In 2016, Dr. Mike received his Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Mike is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Illinois Dental Society, and the Chicago Dental Society.
Flap Surgery
In many cases, a periodontal procedure, which is known as flap surgery, is frequently recommended. During this procedure, the gums in the affected area are reflected away from the teeth and supporting bone. Now, the pocket and roots of the teeth can be thoroughly cleaned and supporting tissues recontoured as needed. When this step gets completed, the tissue flag gets sutured back into place.
Gum Surgery
Periodontal treatment in this phase is designed to halt the progression of the disease and to restore tooth support as possible. Treatment may involve medications to control the bacteria and reduce the size of the pockets between the teeth and gums, gum surgery, as well as bone and tissue grafts.
Tooth Extractions
Beginning as a simple pinpoint defect on the outermost enamel layer of your tooth, untreated dental decay will continue to compromise healthy tooth structure as it works its way to the inner layers of the tooth. It has been my pleasure to care for your dental needs over the 30+ years of my dental career. I have always sought to provide you with the best that modern dentistry has to offer. I have been able to do this because I have devoted my personal time away from the office attending continuing education programs, so that I am always aware of and using the most current and efficacious techniques and dental materials. As many of you know, I participated in and supervised many continuing education programs for my colleagues through leadership positions in the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and the Chicago Dental Society (CDS). I found I enjoy helping my colleagues further their dental education and accumulate new skills to improve patient care. Recently, a position with the Chicago Dental Society dealing with continuing education became available. This full-time position, the Director of Scientific Programs, involves hiring speakers, arranging courses and executing the CE program for one of the largest dental education meetings in the world, Chicago Midwinter Meeting, as well as several smaller meetings. I applied, interviewed, and was selected from a number of qualified candidates for this position. I will annually supervise a meeting consisting of over 200 courses, 150 speakers, a veritable army of volunteers, as well as a seven-figure budget. Since this is a full-time position, it will mean the end of my clinical career and my time caring for you.
