James C. Ricketti received is BA in biology from Rider University, Lawrenceville, New Jersey before earning his Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland. He completed his medical training with a podiatric medicine and surgery residency, and an orthopedic residency at St. Luke’s and Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Penn. Dr. Ricketti is certified by the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and Podiatric Orthopedics. In addition, he is a Fellow of the International Academy of Clinical Electrodynography, the American College of Foot Orthopedists and the American Board of Podiatric Sports Medicine. His hospital affiliations include the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton where he served as the former Chief of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery.

Bunion surgery is usually performed on an out-patient basis which means patients get to go home on the same day of the surgery. Ankle Instability
Sprains are an extremely common ankle injury. They involve possible joint damage resulting in pain, instability, and swelling, to more severe damage, such as torn ligaments, bruised cartilage and broken bones. Osteochondritis is a disorder where loose bone or cartilage gets caught between joints or bones, causing stiffness, pain, and swelling, in severe cases, immobility. Twisting-type injury of the ankle can cause loose piece(s) of bone or cartilage. Untreated sprained ankles result in prolonged symptoms. These can include chronic pain or ankle instability, that makes a person prone to repetitive injury later in life and arthritic changes.

Bunions Problems
Bunions are due primarily to genetic factors, but can become painful over time due to trauma, ill-fitting shoes and poor foot structure. The bone connected to the big toe starts to drift outward pushing the big toe sideways into the other toes which can also lead to painful hammertoes, corns & calluses. Untreated bunions not only can become painful, but can become progressively worse. Wider shoes, padding & custom orthotics may slow down this progression, surgery is the only way to correct the bunion deformity.

Some of the symptoms of toenail fungus (onychomycosis) are thick, yellow, discolored toenails. Fungal toenails are caused by an organism that grows in and under the toenail. The fungus likes to grow in warm, moist places like your shoes. Many patients pick up fungal toenail infections in the gym locker room, from a nail salon, wet shoes or from trauma. Fungus can stay in the nails for many years and can be passed from one person to another.
