Child Support
Several members of the Firm have substantial experience in issues involving determination of parentage, custody, child support and visitation in parentage cases. The firm represents both mothers and fathers in parentage cases. Alan Alderson, Michelle Slinkard, Jennifer Martin Smith, Keegan McElroy and Brian Frost have years of experience in these matters, and they are able to skillfully guide their clients through the maze of issues involved in parentage cases.

Adoption
Michelle was born in Hays, Kansas, where she attended Fort Hays State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1998. Michelle joined the firm in 1999 as a law clerk. She clerked with the firm until she graduated with Dean’s Honors from Washburn University School of Law in 2001. She has been a partner with the firm since 2004. Michelle is admitted to practice before the state and federal courts of Kansas, and she is a member of the Kansas Bar Association (KBA) and the Topeka Bar Association (TBA). Michelle received the TBA’s Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award in 2005, after serving as President of the TBA’s Young Lawyers Division. She has been on the Board of Directors of the Women Attorneys Association of Topeka and on the TBA’s Board of Directors. She has served several terms on the Executive Board of the Sam A. Crow American Inn of Court, including as President, and remains a member of the Inn. Michelle also is on the Shawnee County Family Law Committee, Shawnee County Guidelines Committee and serves as a mentor in the TBA mentoring Program. Michelle has been appointed to another term on the Kansas Child Support Guidelines Committee. Bob Alderson co-authored Chapter 4 (“Operating Problems”) of the Kansas Bar Association’s Kansas Corporation Law & Practice. He previously chaired an ad hoc committee formed by the Kansas Bar Association to study the need for revising the Kansas General Corporation Code, and he also served on a subsequent KBA committee formed to compare the Kansas Code with the Delaware Corporation Law.

Darin’s practice currently emphasizes business and administrative law. Darin actively practices before numerous administrative agencies in matters related to business operations. In addition, Darin is actively and extensively involved in the workers’ compensation arena, representing employers, insurance companies, individuals and the Kansas Workers Compensation Fund in the litigation of claims before the Division of Workers’ Compensation, the Appeals Board and the appellate courts, and serves as General Counsel for the Kansas Board of Accountancy. Darin also devotes time to the representation of clients in matters involving contracts and antitrust concerns.

Jennifer Martin Smith graduated with honors from the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 2002, and received her B.S. in Sociology from Missouri State University in 1999. After practicing employment litigation in Kansas City, Missouri for several years, Jennifer relocated to Topeka and joined the Alderson Law Firm as Of Counsel. Dan Crow’s practice focuses on all of these real estate matters and also extends to real estate and construction litigation. Dan also serves as General Counsel for dozens of homeowners’ associations where he provides guidance for the creation, implementation and enforcement of restrictive covenants.
Construction Litigation
Since 1980, Dan has maintained a Kansas Real Estate Broker’s license and is very familiar with the real estate brokerage business. Accordingly, Dan represents and consults with numerous real estate brokers and agents in all aspects of the brokerage business including breach of contract matters and license law compliance. He represents both individuals and business owners in a broad range of real estate matters including buying and selling property, leases, title defects, easements, zoning, eminent domain and all corresponding transactional disputes. He also represents both owners and building contractors with construction disputes and if necessary, construction litigation. Dan’s broad real estate practice also includes counsel for numerous Homeowner Associations which rely on Dan’s expertise and experience in resolving various association issues, including the need to create or revise their bylaws and restrictive covenants. As Dan’s clients know, if it has to do with the land, you have to call Dan.

Dan counsels clients on how to most economically create a family legacy and how to most efficiently pass it to loved ones. This can include the creation and administration of Wills and Trusts... or other probate avoidance techniques. If disputes arise, Dan can help. He has successfully litigated several hotly contested matters regarding Will disputes, competency claims and insurance proceeds litigation. While never the first choice, if litigation is necessary, Dan can help.
