- Integrated Pest Management for Bed Bugs The current national problem with bed bugs is likely due to the convergence of three human behaviors: lack of awareness of the historical and biological link humans have with bed bugs, increased international travel, and past over-reliance on pesticides. Bed bugs are a ānest parasiteā that resides in the human nest ā the bedroom. Over time, bed bugs have evolved to develop resistance to many of the chemical pesticides currently used. In fact, bed bugs were widely resistant to DDT by the mid-1950s (5http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/ehs/publications/bed_bugs_cdc-epa_statement.htm#5>). Integrated pest management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with people and the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment. Bed bug control is most effective when an IPM approach is implemented with diligent participation by the residents. In multi-family housing, diligent participation is also required of the building management. IPM takes advantage of all appropriate pest management options, including the judicious use of pesticides. Although bed bugs may sometimes be controlled by non-chemical means alone, this approach is often very difficult, potentially less effective, and usually more resource intensive. A comprehensive IPM program to control bed bugs may include a number of methods such as: * using monitoring devices, * removing clutter where bed bugs can hide, * applying heat treatment, * vacuuming, * sealing cracks and crevices to remove hiding places, * using non-chemical pesticides (such as diatomaceous earth) and * judicious use of effective chemical pesticides A coordinated community IPM program can alleviate both the discomfort and cost of managing bed bugs. The underlying philosophy of bed bug IPM is based on the fact that bed bug infestations will not go away without intervention. Intervention is most effective when populations are low. Such a coordinated effort could create a partnership among government, property managers, citizens, and pest management professionals to ensure an effective intervention facilitated by environmental health professionals. EPA and CDC recommend that pest management and environmental health professionals throughout the U.S. continue to use IPM strategies as they address the bed bug issue. Economically, bed bug infestations are also a burden on society. Although the exact dollar amount is not known, the economic losses from health care, lost wages, lost revenue and reduced productivity can be substantial. The cost of effectively eliminating bed bugs may be significantly more than the cost of eliminating other pests because bed bug control usually requires multiple visits by a licensed pest control operator and diligence on the part of those who are experiencing the infestation. Control in multi-family homes is much more difficult than in single family homes because bed bugs frequently travel between units, either by direct transport by humans or through voids in the walls. There are additional costs and complexities associated with coordinating and encouraging participation from multiple residents.

We had a bee/wasp issue and needed fast and reliable service to tend to this problem. ABX Pest Control was professional as well as extremely friendly and helpful. Charlie walked the property with me while I pointed out problem areas, then he also showed me other areas that he wanted to tend to in order to prevent furthur problems in the future. Then, instead of suggesting that he return each year, he gave suggestions for us to do so that we would not need his services in the future. I was very impressed by this and would readily recommend this business to family and friends. Thanks!!!
A couple weeks after this service, we noticed we still had some lingering bees/wasps. I called ABX Pest Control again (on July 4th) and they readily agreed to come out the next morning. They resprayed the entire area at no extra cost and we have not had any issues since then. They even removed a wayward frog! Great guys...thanks!
I am starting to feel like part of the family! Since my last review I have had to call ABX Pest Control twice...once for Japanese beetles destroying my trees and another for dealing with a hornets nest in my bushes and ground. I never thought twice about who to call! They always come out immediately and address the problem with the promise to return if needed. I would recommend them to everyone!!!

I went on vacation and brought "friends" home with me. This company came out and exterminated for me within 2 days. The owner was calming and knowledgeable. It was nice to see a family owned business where father and son came out and worked professionally. I didn't know they were related until the owner told me. I am very confident that my little friends are not going to be coming back. I have kids here and my pets. I would tell anyone who has any kind of pest issue to contact these people. They were truly amazing. Thanks SO much! I wish I could give you more stars.

This is a family owned & mnaged business. i had a wasp problem that was driving me nuts & causing me to lose sleep at night. ABX Pest Control took care of the problem at a reasonable cost relative to their national competition. I would even recommend this company to people I didn't like. They are THAT GOOD.

I was going through yellow pages getting quotes for extermination of ants and everyone did just that but Charlie was the only one who really listened and gave me advice to try on my own first since i lived quite a distance from his normal business range. Thanx Charlie!

ABX Pest Control has been wonderful! We moved into an apartment that had some problems we didn't know about at the time. They've come back as many times as necessary provided we listen to their tips on what to do ourselves as well. They are a family, and they will take care of your family!

I rent out a upper and lower unit in kenmore. My lower tenants of 10 years called me to say out of nowhere they are seeing roaches. So I went to do a walk threw and realized the new upper tenate had been living like a pig and developed a major infestation that had spread all the way downstairs.
Charlie came out and was extremely helpful in fixing this embarresing problem. I used a different extermator once before and the lake of professionalism in comparison to this company is night and day. I will recommend them to anyone who will listen. Great job!
