This increase in pressure may cause progressive damage to the optic nerve through the loss of optic nerve fibers. Advanced glaucoma may even cause blindness (second leading cause of blindness in the U. S. and most often occurs in people over 40). High eye pressure alone does not mean that a person will develop glaucoma, and many people who have normal eye pressure may develop other forms of glaucoma.

Ophthalmology
Dr. Joseph E. Zeiter Jr., M.D. received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, San Diego. He then completed four years of medical school at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He did his internship at the University of Arizona in Tucson and then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit in 2012. He finished a six-week externship to further sharpen his Spanish skills in Medellin, Colombia and joined Zeiter Eye in 2012, as the fourth Zeiter to join the practice.
Macular Degeneration
Dr. John C. Canzano is a board-certified ophthalmologist with specialized training and experience in refractive, cataract, and vitreoretinal surgery. Dr. Canzano completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University and earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He finished his residency training at UC Davis Medical Center, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology. Dr. Canzano then pursued specialty training in the field of retina at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. Dr. Canzano is dedicated to the management of diabetic eye disease as well as macular degeneration, but also promotes a well-rounded and progressive approach to improving vision via his interest in refractive and cataract surgeries.
Laser Eye Surgery
Although most people think of LASIK surgery when discussing refractive surgery, not all patients are ideal candidates for LASIK; however, RLE may be performed instead.
Cataracts
A cataract is a painless, cloudy area in the lens of the eye that blocks the passage of light to the retina, which causes vision impairment. Cataracts sometimes may remain small and may not be noticeable. They may not seriously affect vision, and some cataracts do not need to be removed. However, many cataracts grow larger or more dense over time, often causing severe vision changes. Globally cataracts are the leading cause of blindness, affecting 18 million people. Cataracts are even more significant as a cause of low vision affecting 62 million worldwide.
Cataract Surgery
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is very similar to cataract surgery with the specific purpose of improving a patient’s visual acuity and reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. It is not necessary to have cataracts in order to perform RLE.
Eye Exam
The first time you visit Zeiter Eye Medical Group, you will be given a comprehensive eye examination. During this initial meeting, your current eye-wear prescriptions will be reviewed, and your vision history will be discussed.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Sometimes a cataract should be removed even if it does not cause problems with your vision. For example, a cataract should be removed if it prevents examination or treatment of another eye problem, such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. If your Zeiter Eye care professional finds a cataract, you may not need cataract surgery for several years. In fact, you might never need cataract surgery. By having your vision tested regularly, you and your eye care professional can discuss if and when you might need treatment.

Ultrasound
Phacoemulsification, or phaco. A small incision is made on the side of the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. Your doctor inserts a tiny probe into the eye. This device emits ultrasound waves that soften and break up the lens so that it can be removed by suction. Most cataract surgery today is done by phacoemulsification, also called “small incision cataract surgery.”
