Dental Examination
During your child’s first visit, your child will meet the hygienist who will ‘Tell, Show, Do’ to ensure there aren’t any surprises. While you’re waiting, you can kick back, relax, take advantage of the quiet time, and enjoy our ‘Parents Hydration Station’ with freshly brewed coffee and bottled water. If you would like to support your child during their cleaning, we also have a chair available for you in the exam room at all times. After your child has completed their digital x-rays (if necessary) and teeth cleaning, they will meet Dr. Tucker, who will provide a comprehensive oral examination and apply topical fluoride. Your child gets to decide what flavor of fluoride they would like: Bubblegum, Mint, Cherry, Caramel, and more. Dr. Tucker will review the treatment needs (if any) so you leave our office fully understanding your child’s current oral health and all treatment options available.

Teeth Cleaning
One of the greatest tools we have in preventing dental disease is fluoride, prescribed in appropriate doses. A fluoride toothpaste used at home daily will help tremendously in preventing dental disease and can rebuild very small cavities. A boost of fluoride is giving during dental cleanings via fluoride varnish. Fluoride supplements can also be used for children whose water source (well or bottled water) does not have a source of fluoride.
Fluoride Treatment
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by the age of 1. A thorough and quick examination allows for early detection and prevention of dental problems and supports good home care habits. An exam, cleaning and fluoride treatment for all children under the age of three is the perfect opportunity to get your child comfortable with visits to Dr. Tucker. We are always available to answer your questions or concerns.

Space Maintainers
A unique aspect of teeth is that they don’t grow in size, only in length. Many parents ask when the first adult teeth come in “why are they so big?!”. The answer is that the teeth aren’t big, their head is just still small! Many children lack adequate space for the adult teeth, and they may need to come out early. When a tooth is lost early, a space maintainer (spacer) is needed to allow the adult tooth to erupt into the proper place.

There are many things that can cause cavities, and it can be very complicated. If your child gets a cavity, it is not the end of the world and does not make you a bad parent. Catching a cavity early leads to the best and least invasive or expensive treatment options. Most cavities can be fixed with a white tooth-colored filling, but larger cavities may need a crown to cover the entire tooth. Painful cavities may involve a nerve treatment to alleviate pain and keep the tooth healthy.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth usually come in from ages 17-21. Not everyone has wisdom teeth, and not everyone who does has enough room for them when they come in. Wisdom teeth are usually extracted due to lack of space, and to prevent complications later in life. Many times, a patient needs to be put to sleep to remove their wisdom teeth, and they would be referred to an oral surgeon. When the teeth are erupted into the mouth and need to be removed, treatment can be performed in our office.

Braces
A pediatric dentist attends an additional 2-3 years of specialty training to focus on all the unique aspects of a child’s anatomy and physiology. We become experts on how to safely offer dental care to children with the use of sedation when needed, and how to keep the baby teeth healthy to successfully guide the adult teeth into place. Sometimes those adult teeth need a little help coming in and a baby tooth may need to come out early or early braces and appliances may be needed.
