The State College Presbyterian Church has a current membership of approximately 1241 members. So far in 2009 we have welcomed 9 new members into our congregation with three additional new member classes to be offered throughout this year. State College Presbyterian Church was founded in 1890 and the present buildings were constructed in 1913, 1941 & 1994. The State College Presbyterian Church is a local expression of the Universal Church, one of over 11, 000 nationwide that make up Presbyterian Church ( USA ). There are over 2.9 million members, united in the mission of Jesus Christ. The State College Presbyterian Church of State College, Pennsylvania has been called by God and organized to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, to minister to the needs of members of the congregation and residents of the community, and to promote peace and justice in the world. On January 8, 1906, the congregation directed the Trustees to build a parsonage that was to cost "not less than $3, 000". Later that year a red brick manse was constructed at the corner of East Beaver Avenue and Locust Lane, on a lot given by John Hamilton. It was located just one block south of the church, and it was into this manse that the Rev. Dr. Samuel Martin moved when he became pastor on September 1, 1908. By 1910 State College was experiencing "growing pains, and both the Methodists and Presbyterians had outgrown their buildings. Another year would find the town, college, and faculty doubled with 2, 000 students, 177 faculty members, and an expanding community of 2, 000. A survey in 1911, by a congregational committee and presbytery, led to an agreement with the Presbyterian Board of Education of the General Assembly, the Synod and the Presbytery, to raise $75, 000 for the erection and endowment of a new and larger church. The cornerstone was laid on October 27, 1912, at an impressive ceremony. The governing Board of the State College Presbyterian Church is called the Session. The Session is made up of Elders chosen by the people of the congregation, plus the Pastors, to exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of the Church. The Board of Deacons at State College Presbyterian Church is divided into Ministry Units of Caregiving, Service, and Mission. Learn more about Visiting Deacons An additional board was added to in 1993 with the purpose of providing visitation ministry. The Visiting Deacons call on people who are hospitalized, homebound, or otherwise would benefit from a special visit.
