Chiropractic Adjustments
Adjustments are a safe, natural, non-invasive procedure used by the chiropractor to help restore and improve your health. Learning the art of adjusting is a skill that requires years of study and practice. Chiropractic doctors are the only health care professionals trained to deliver the chiropractic adjustment.
Spinal Adjustments
Spinal adjustments are applied to certain vertebrae of the spine which are no longer in their proper position or where functioning has become impaired. Vertebrae which lose their normal position or proper motion are commonly termed vertebral subluxations or misalignments. The chiropractor uses a number of unique tests and procedures to determine which, if any, vertebrae are subluxated. If subluxations/misalignments are found, immediate correction is generally indicated. Since like cavities subluxations are not always painful during the initial stages, even those who are not experiencing back or neck discomfort should receive periodic spinal checkups.
Intersegmental Traction
Intersegmental Traction (IST) is a way of inducing passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching spinal joints, increasing mobility.
Subluxation
Once you have experienced your first adjustment, congratulations are in order. The purpose of your first adjustment is to begin to correct vertebral subluxations (spinal misalignments causing nerve interference) that have most likely been present for a while, maybe years. As a result, your body and mind may have become accustomed to behavior patterns produced by a nervous system that was not working at its best. This will begin to change with your first adjustment!
Manipulation Therapy
In basic terms, the spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation refers to the process in which the doctor of chiropractic skillfully applies controlled force into one or more "subluxated" vertebrae of the spine. The adjustment is also frequently used in the pelvic region to normalize the sacroiliac joints. The adjustment is usually delivered using the hands or through the use of a specialized mechanical tool.
Applied Kinesiology
Thus we have a binary or yes/no system telling us if an area needs or does not need to be corrected or adjusted. This system is akin to muscle testing (applied kinesiology or AK) wherein a muscle will become weak when confronted with a negative impulse.
