Glaucoma
Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the United States, is an eye disease that can lead to a permanent loss of vision. This disease has been labeled the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because in its most typical form, there are no symptoms. No pain, no swelling, no redness. Patients with glaucoma may not notice symptoms until vision has been permanently lost.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Vekovius is considered an expert in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, having performed close to two thousand procedures over the past five years on the eyelid alone. He is one of the few cosmetic surgeons in who is a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and directs his care with not only the cosmetic appearance, but also the health of the eye as the main focus.
Macular Degeneration
There is no cure, but laser treatment may be used to slow the progression of the disease. Magnifying devices such as glasses and hand or stand magnifiers, bright illuminations for reading, and large print books and newspapers are available as a low vision aid options. Dr. Vekovius’s training is impressive. He first completed his Ophthalmology training at Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 2001. In his quest to master the art of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, he then underwent fellowship training in oculoplastic surgery, specializing in techniques of plastic surgery as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding structures such as eyelid repairs, browlifts, tear duct surgery, and treatment of thyroid eye disease. Trained by Thomas C. Spoor, M.D., he also learned the art of laser skin resurfacing and treatment of facial veins and blemishes as well as use of Botox and Restylane. He then pursued further training in Neuro-Ophthalmology, the subspecialty of Ophthalmology which encompasses the optic nerve, the nerves which control eye movement, and the brain. In addition, Dr. Vekovius is an expert in skin cancer excision and reconstruction, as he continues to perform several surgeries each month removing cancers from the eyelids and face and then rebuilding the defect to produce an aesthetically pleasing result.
Eyelid Surgery
Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
Plastic Surgery
How the patient heals is often the greatest contributor to undesired results. Some patients form excessive scarring both internally or externally, leading to malposition or malfunction of the tissues. Conjunctivitis, which can be due to viral or bacterial infection, can cause pain that feels like grit in the eye. Uveitis is characterized by dull, aching pain. It may be an autoimmune condition. Glaucoma causes the pressure of the fluid in the eye to rise and is characterized by severe pain and may cause nausea or vomiting. Corneal ulcer due to a foreign object in the eye can produce severe redness and pain. Macular degeneration of the retina causes fuzzy vision, although peripheral vision is not affected. It is a disease of the elderly. Cataracts cause a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye and is also a disease of the elderly.
