To keep these ligaments strong and healthy you have to be able to move and stay active. Sometimes trauma (from a sport injury, fall, or car accident, for example) weakens the hip’s ligaments and cartilage and upsets the synovial fluid balance. Sometimes hip joints can weaken just from the normal wear and tear of aging. Whatever the cause, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis may develop.
Electrocardiogram
Pre-admission Appointment: Prior to this appointment—which takes place at the hospital—you should have had your pre-operative tests performed by your family doctor. This appointment will take approximately one to two hours for lab tests, including blood work, EKG, and chest X-ray. If you have a heart or lung condition, or if you are an insulin-dependent diabetic, you must see your medical doctor prior to surgery and get medical clearance. Before you leave, you will also meet with someone from the anesthesia department.

Wound Care
Wound Care: The surgical dressing is usually removed after two days. You may keep the incision open to air as long as there is no bleeding or drainage. Your sutures will be removed either by a home health care nurse or in the office approximately two weeks after your surgery.

Joint Replacement
Dr. Longo is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is active in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also an avid researcher and speaker, with many studies, publications, presentations, and patents to his credit. Dr. Longo currently is chairman of surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and is co-medical chairman for Joint Replacement Services.
Hip Replacement
To determine whether you need surgery, consult Dr. Longo. He will evaluate your medical history, take X-rays, and assess your walking, leg motion, and joint condition. It’s possible he may then recommend a total hip replacement with artificial materials made from metal and either ceramic or polyethylene. This is what is called a hip joint prosthesis. The aim of this surgery is to correct the deteriorating condition of your present hip and to help you regain movement and eliminate most of the pain you have been experiencing.
Knee Replacement
To determine whether you need surgery, consult Dr. Longo. He will evaluate your medical history, take X-rays, and assess your walking, leg motion, and joint condition. The aim of this surgery is to correct the deteriorating condition of your present knee and to help you regain movement and eliminate most of the pain you have been experiencing.

Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy: Physical therapy begins the day of surgery. A therapist will come to your room and help you with exercises and walking. You will receive therapy twice a day while you're in the hospital. Following home physical therapy you may go to an outpatient physical therapy facility two to three times a week for two to six weeks.
