An endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine your stomach lining, the walls of your upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, and nearby organs including the pancreas and gallbladder. An endoscopic ultrasound is performed to diagnose the cause of conditions including abdominal pain, abnormal weight loss, and more.
Colonoscopy
During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum. A tiny camera is attached to the end of the colonoscope that allows the doctor to view the entire inside of the colon.

He received his bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Georgia, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Go Dawgs! He continued his education in Georgia attending the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and then went on to complete fellowship training in Gastroenterology at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Gastroenterology
As the Director of the Candler/St. Joseph hospital Gastroenterology Department and Co-Chair of the Lewis Cancer Center GI tumor board, Dr. Wiggins is committed to providing excellence in care to patients seen in his office but also the Savannah community. “My philosophy is that our patients deserve the absolute best we can offer them,” Dr. Wiggins says. “When I see a patient, I want to understand their particular problem but also go out of my way to get to know that individual. Colon Cancer
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that is performed to evaluate the lower part of the lower intestine (colon) and the rectum. A flexible sigmoidoscopy is used to investigate the possible causes of intestinal symptoms or to screen for colon cancer every five years.
Endoscopy
An upper endoscopy, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure that is performed to examine your upper digestive system. This procedure can diagnose, and sometimes treat, conditions in the esophagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine (duodenum).

Ultrasound
An EUS typically lasts between 30-60 minutes. Before the procedure, you may be administered a mild sedative to reduce any discomfort. Your doctor will then pass a long, flexible tube through your mouth or anus to get to the area that needs to be examined. After that, your doctor will turn on the ultrasound attachment to produce sound waves that create images for your doctor to examine. After your procedure, you might experience a sore throat or mild bloating. Because of the sedative, you will not be able to work for 24 hours after the procedure and will need a companion to drive you home.
