Another cause of GERD can be the diaphragm, a very large muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen. George Goodheart, D.C., founder of Applied Kinesiology Methods, called the diaphragm "the most important muscle in the body after the heart." The diaphragm may be considered a second gastric safety valve after the LES. If the diaphragm is weak or torn, the stomach frequently protrudes through the enlarged esophageal opening producing the gastric reflux symptoms plus shortness of breath on minimal exertion, lung conditions, and fatigue. This condition is known as Hiatal Hernia which is very common after middle age. In essence both GERD (due to LES failure) and Hiatal Hernia produce very similar symptoms because both conditions permit HCL (hydrochloric acid) to regurgitate backwards.
