Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. A narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand—houses the median nerve and the tendons that bend the fingers. The median nerve provides feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle, and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.

Since every joint in the body is susceptible to arthritis and chronic pain, sometimes cortisone and/or anesthetic injection directly into the joint is necessary for relief. Arthritis is one or several pain management treatments our hand care specialists help relieve. Some of these joint injections may be performed using the guidance of our state-of-the-art ultrasound or X-ray guidance called fluoroscopy, which lets the physician see moving internal structures to determine exactly where the medication needs to be directed.

Sciatica is a pain that radiates from the low back down a lower extremity; it is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve transmits sensation from the lower extremities and lumbar area of the low back. It is common for people to recover from sciatica without a surgical operation. Low back pain that radiates to the hip, buttock, and down a lower extremity is the most common symptom of sciatica. Sometimes sciatica pain worsens with bending at the waist, coughing, sitting, or sneezing. Sciatica can also cause tingling, numbness, or weakness of the leg. Sciatica symptoms can occur rapidly and persist for weeks.
Arthroscopy
Depending on the location of your pain and injuries, your CRO Doctor may recommend various diagnostics such as a knee arthroscopy – also called knee scoping – a minor surgical procedure used for both diagnosing and treating the knee. Other possible treatment options include physical therapy and rest. However, if you’re suffering from painful symptoms associated with soft tissue or cartilage damage, orthopedic surgery may be recommended. Treatment will depend on the severity of your condition. Severe damage to a knee may require a combined surgical reconstruction.

Pinched Nerve
An Electromyogram (EMG) is an electrical test for the muscles and nerves. There are two types of EMG tests, the Nerve Conduction Studies, and the Needle Examination. These tests can be done in-office and take on average between 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the extensiveness of the test. A physician may order an EMG for a patient who is having problems with their muscles or nerves. More specifically, for a patient who has a pinched nerve in the back or neck, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs, and weakness of the muscle or fatigue.
Joint Replacement
Joint replacement of the hand and wrist are very similar to a knee or hip replacement. The damaged joints are replaced by a prosthetic joint that can be made of Silicone, Polyethylene, Titanium, or Pyrocarbon. It is less common for the joints to be replaced in the hands or wrist, because the bone structure of the hand is small and complex, making the surgery more challenging. Since the joint replacement is a major surgery, some things to consider before deciding on the surgery are the recovery time, age, pain, and disability. Surgery may be a good idea if you cannot complete regular daily tasks without assistance, have significant pain every day, pain does not go away when you rest, non-surgical approaches do not provide pain management, or pain keeps you awake at night.

Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, is a painful condition in which the movement of the shoulder becomes limited. Frozen shoulder occurs when the strong connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint (called the shoulder joint capsule) becomes thick, stiff, and inflamed. (The joint capsule contains the ligaments that attach the top of the upper arm bone [humeral head] to the shoulder socket [glenoid], firmly holding the joint in place. This is more commonly known as the “ball and socket” joint.)
