Founded in 2006, Velasquez Elementary is an educational institution that offers a range of academic and extracurricular programs for students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. It provides classes in art, music, math, science, computer technology and physical education. The school offers a variety of awards and recognitions to its students for behavior improvements. It organizes reading nights, parent-teacher association meetings, spelling bee competitions, music shows, and fitness and exercise sessions. Velasquez Elementary provides opportunities for students to act as news anchors, reporters, directors, cameramen and computer video-board operators for presenting televised announcements. Its student council focuses on the development of leadership skills through representation and community service for students in grades three through five. Additionally, the school maintains a library that stocks several books and a database of resource Web sites. Velasquez Elementary is a part of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District, which governs elementary, middle and high schools.
