Dental Examination

Teeth Cleaning
Our staff will review the health history form with you at the first visit. Your child will be introduced to our dental team and invited to tour the office. You are welcome to accompany your child into the treatment area during the initial exam. This will give you the opportunity to see our staff in action and allow your dentist to discuss any dental findings and treatment directly with you. Your dentist will perform a head and neck examination and then evaluate the health of the teeth, gums and your child’s bite. Additionally, your child will receive a dental cleaning and fluoride. Dental radiographs (x-rays) are taken only when they are necessary. Additional services will be scheduled for a later visit.
Fluoride Treatment
BRUSHING: Since your child has had a cleaning and fluoride treatment today, it is not necessary to resume tooth brushing and flossing until tomorrow morning. However, it is very important for you to brush and floss your child’s teeth beginning tomorrow morning and on a daily basis thereafter, to prevent infection and future dental problems.
Dental Sealants
By forming a thin covering over the pits and fissures, sealants keep out plaque and food, thus decreasing the risk of decay. Since, the covering is only over the biting surface of the tooth, areas on the side and between teeth cannot be coated with the sealant. Good oral hygiene and nutrition are still very important in preventing decay next to these sealants or in areas unable to be covered.
Space Maintainers
A space maintainer is used to hold space for a permanent tooth when a baby tooth has been prematurely lost. If space is not maintained, teeth on either side of the missing tooth can drift into the space and prevent the permanent tooth from erupting.

Fillings
Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are silver colored “caps” used to restore teeth that are too badly decayed to hold fillings, need a nerve treatment, or when durability is a concern. Crowns with white facings can be used on front teeth.

Pulpotomy
This procedure is a nerve treatment in which the sick portion of the tooth nerve is removed and medicine is placed in order to avoid extracting the tooth.
Root Canal Treatment
A pulpectomy is necessary when the nerve of the tooth is dead. The entire infected pulp is removed and medication is placed in the root canals.

Orthodontics
As a child grows and matures, there may be indications that your child’s teeth may not develop into normal position and biting relationships. Your dentist may inform you that your child may need orthodontic treatment once their permanent teeth have fully erupted. << return to top of page
Braces
Interceptive orthodontic treatment (commonly referred to as Phase I) allows minor tooth movement during an early developmental time in your child’s life. This type of treatment may include fixed or removable appliances, spacers, and/or braces. Early treatment may have the benefit of eliminating or minimizing the need for additional treatment later in life.

General Dentistry
Stacey is originally from Wisconsin but has called Raleigh home for more than 25 years. She has over ten years of experience working in general dentistry as a front desk administrator and is so excited about joining our pediatric dental team. She loves traveling, spending time with friends and family (especially her twins when they are home from college), walking her dog Koda, hiking, kayaking, camping, doing yoga and seeing live music.
