Medical Weight Loss
If you are serious about snoring prevention, then the first step is to look at your weight. If you are overweight, and your snoring worsened with weight gain, then you may have a good chance of preventing snoring by losing weight. One thing to be aware of is that although weight loss can sometime be a good snoring prevention strategy, it does not always stop sleep apnea.
Snoring
Oral appliance therapy is a relatively newer form of treatment for snoring and sleep apnea, and thus there are few scientific studies on its effectiveness, side effects, and compliance. Oftentimes it is referred to as a "mouthpiece for snoring" although this is not a medical or scientific term. It is clear, based on medical research, that the oral appliance is not for everyone. It tends to be effective for treating sleep apnea only about 51% of the time (although some studies report slightly higher success rates). This is compared to success rates for CPAP which is almost always effective. Importantly, the oral appliance is generally not effective for severe sleep apnea.

Sleep Disorders
According to the most recent edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, there are approximately 81 distinct sleep disorders. However, only a handful are seen on a daily basis in sleep centers. The following article briefly describes the most common sleep disorders encountered in sleep centers.
Electrocardiogram
Sleep studies involve spending the night in a sleep laboratory. A number of sensors are put on your body: electrodes on your head to look at your brain waves, sensors over your nose and mouth to record airflow, a microphone on your neck to record snoring, stretchy straps on your chest and belly to look at respiratory effort, heart rate monitor (EKG), oxygen monitor on your finger, muscle tone monitors, eye movement monitors, and a camera in the corner just in case you decide to sleep walk.

Dr. Fromherz attended college at the University of Oregon, where he received a bachelors of arts and masters degrees in Psychology. He attended medical school at Georgetown Medical School where he was the recipient of the Desmond S. O'Doherty award in the Department of Neurology. He completed his Neurology residency at Stanford Medical Center, and while there, he was introduced to the field of Sleep Medicine.

Hypothyroidism
The last reason a person with normal anatomy may develop snoring is under certain medical conditions. Hypothyroidism is a medical condition where a person's thyroid levels are low. When thyroid levels are low, the tissues in the throat change in terms of floppiness. So patients with hypothyroidism are more likely to have snoring and sleep apnea. Another common medical condition, menopause, can lead to snoring in a woman who previously didn't snore. These are just two of the many medical causes of snoring.
