Dental Examination
Regular checkups include a thorough cleaning, polishing, and an oral exam. During the oral exam, the doctor checks the health of your child’s mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue.
X-rays
We recommend taking necessary x-rays. Today, using modern techniques, x-rays provide a safe aid in assessing your child’s dental health. If your child is at a high risk of dental caries, we may suggest taking x-rays at an early age. Permanent teeth start coming in around age six, and x-rays help us make sure your child’s teeth and jaw are healthy and properly aligned.

Teeth Cleaning
Our focus is on preventive dentistry and timely check-ups. We know that prevention and regular check ups are the most effective measures to keep down the cost of dental care. Regular care helps to detect cavities and orthodontic problems while they are still small. Your child should visit us every 6 months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year along with cleanings to keep teeth their strongest. Tooth sealants are also recommended because they “seal out” food and plaque from the deep grooves in your child’s teeth, preventing decay from forming in these hard-to-reach areas. Sealants last for several years, but will be monitored at your regular checkups.
Fluoride Treatment
Dental Sealants
Sometimes brushing is not enough. Everyone has hard-to-reach spots in their mouth, and brushing doesn’t always fully clean those difficult places. When that happens, your child is at risk for tooth decay. Using sealants on your child’s teeth gives you an extra line of defense against tooth decay.

Crowns
If your child’s tooth has been knocked out of their mouth, find the tooth and rinse it with water (no soap), taking care to only touch the crown of the tooth (the part you can see when it’s in place). If the tooth is permanent, and if you can, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it in place with a clean towel or cloth. If you can’t return the tooth to its socket, place it in a clean container with milk. In either case, call us immediately and/or head to the hospital. If you act quickly it’s possible to save the tooth.

Orthodontics
Pediatric Dentists are the dental specialists (like pediatricians are medical specialists) for children. The specialty of Pediatric Dentistry requires 2-3 years of additional training beyond that of a general dentist in such areas as child psychology, pediatric medicine, growth and development in children, pediatric nutrition, and developmental orthodontics.

General Dentistry
Dr. Jonathan Lang (Dr. Jon) attended Loyola High School in Towson, MD and he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Loyola College in 1998. He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dental Medicine in 2002, and practiced general dentistry for five years before completing a post-doctoral residency in Orthodontics at the University of Colorado in Denver from 2007-2009. Dr. Jon returned to Maryland to begin practicing Orthodontics in 2009.
