Glaucoma
It is estimated that over two million Americans have some type of glaucoma and half of them do not know it. 90% of glaucoma patients have open-angle glaucoma. Although it cannot be cured, it can usually be controlled. Vision loss may be minimized with early diagnosis and early treatment. The eye receives its nourishment from a clear fluid that circulates inside the eye, called aqueous humor, that is created by the Ciliary body. This fluid must be constantly returned to the bloodstream through the eye's drainage canal, called the trabecular meshwork. In the case of open-angle glaucoma, something has gone wrong with the drainage canal. When the fluid cannot drain fast enough, the pressure inside the eye begins to build. This excess fluid pressure pushes against the delicate optic nerve that connects the eye to the brain. If the pressure remains too high for too long, irreversible vision loss can occur.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Dustin McKnight is a Kansas City native. He was raised in Liberty, Missouri and is the older son of the highly respected ophthalmologist, Scott McKnight, M.D. He joined his father in practice following completion of his ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia. During his residency, he received extensive training in Advanced Technology Cataract Surgery and Laser Refractive Surgery. He especially enjoys helping restore and improve vision surgically. He also developed expertise in a wide variety of Ophthalmic conditions including those affecting eyelids, cornea, lens, and retina including glaucoma.
Macular Degeneration
There are various diseases that affect the retina and macula. The most common being age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD occurs as a very common part of the aging process. Prevalence is high in individuals 50 years of age and older. AMD is the leading cause of blindness for the elderly in the United States.

McKensie wore contacts throughout her pageant career but is now able to see 20/20 without the need for contacts or glasses thanks to LASIK with Dr. Dustin McKnight in June 2016.
Cataracts
