Behavioral Counseling
Kat is one of our wonderful technicians and has been with us since 2007. She’s had a passion for working in the veterinary field since she was little and couldn’t imagine doing anything else! She has two sons – Blake and Bryce, two “Italian Chihuahuas,” Bully & Chester and two cats: Roxy and Ember. Her hobbies range from curling up on the couch with a good book to hiking through the state forests with her family and dogs. At work, she has an interest in behavior and training and participates in our puppy classes. She also has a special interest in dental cleanings and the health benefits associated with it.
Nutritional Counseling
Acupuncture can be the only method of choice or can be combined with other treatment options such as the use of herbs or nutritional support. Acupuncture can also be combined with more conventional western treatment options to balance the body’s response to the treatment.
Comprehensive Examination
Weather permitting, we will offer a limited number of outdoor office visits under our canopy tents. These will be restricted to annual physical exams for canines only.

Yes. Heartworms interfere with the normal flow of blood into the right side of the heart and to the vessels serving the lungs. If left untreated, canine heartworm disease can result in congestive failure of the heart and other organs, considerably reduce your dog’s quality of life, and ultimately lead to death.

Lilly is a sweet, 10 year old German Shepard owned by Sara Farias of Westport. She suffers from painful Hip Dysplasia. Angus, pictured at left, is a 7 year old Black Lab owned by Elizabeth and Vern Mace, also of Westport. This friendly boy suffers from arthritis.
Heart Disease Treatment
At first, an infected dog may show few if any signs of infection; but, as the worms grow and mature, they cause increasing damage. Your pet may become listless, tire easily after exercise, develop an occasional or persistent cough, and become anemic. In advanced cases, dogs may suffer congestive heart failure. Complications may develop in the liver and kidneys and the blood supply to the lungs and other organs may become blocked.

Veterinary Surgery

Laboratory Services
From the blood test performed in the exam room, we cannot determine when the exposure has occurred or how severe the infection may be. A C6 antigen test can be sent to an outside lab to measure the level of exposure. If the infection is over the level of 30, we recommend treating. The level can then be rechecked in 6 months to ensure the infection level has been reduced. If the level is low, treatment is not necessary unless the level increases at a later date. An increase can be the result of a re-infection from a tick or emergence of the disease. In an effort to treat before sickness occurs, we recommend retesting the C6 level each year.

General Pet Care

Grooming
Our hospital offers grooming and baths for both dogs and cats. All grooming appointments are scheduled as drop offs where the pet spends the majority of the day with us. This allows the technicians the ability to give the animals breaks if the grooming becomes stressful for the pet at any time. Patients will be given as many breaks as needed. Spending the day in the hospital also allows us to make sure that there is plenty of time to completely dry off after a bath. Because all grooming patients are admitted into the hospital for the day, we require that all vaccines are up to date for their safety.
