Very poorly run office. I called for an appointment with the oncologist after our regular veterinarian found a lump on our dog. We had been to Blue Pearl once before with no problem. This time, however, I called from the veterinarian's office and was given an appointment for two days later. My husband and I both rearranged our work schedules to take our dog into Blue Pearl--only to be told when we arrived that there was no record of an appointment. I showed them the call log on my cell phone. The young man at the front desk apologized, and said he would talk to the office manager. He came back and said that we would have to come back another day. While I appreciate that he tried, I find it unacceptable that the office made a mistake and did not fix it. The manager never came over to try to work out the situation, or even to apologize. I was already worried and stressed about my dog's medical problems, and this experience made everything worse. Not only was our dog not examined, but now we will have to take off more time from work to come back. If you have another option, I recommend you go elsewhere and save yourself the time and heartache.

Our previously healthy 14 year old cat had an episode where he lost bladder/bowl control. We called our vet who recommended Blue Pearl. We brought him in and it looked like a reasonable place. They checked him and and told us they had to do diagnostics on him. Over the next three days they called multiple times telling us that they had to do additional test and asked if we would authorize them. The costs rose quickly. By Day 3, the costs were over $7,000! They told us that he was having small strokes and recommended several medications. We told them that we couldn't continue to pay for additional tests. They discharged him to us and when we picked him up, he was completely stressed, with tons of dandruff and he was absolutely starving!! He ate three chicken breasts when we got him home in a way that suggested to me that he hadn't been fed. Within an hour he had another episode and then proceeded to have multiple episodes within the first day home. We called our vet to come and put him to sleep because he was suffering. Our vet suggested that he was having seizures (not strokes) and suggested that we put him on anti-convulsants. We got the anti-convulsant meds and started him on them, but he was still having seizures, so we scheduled a time to put him down. By, the time the vet got to our place, he was doing better and we couldn't catch him!

Turns out that Blue Pearl completely misdiagnosed him with mini-strokes instead of seizures. So, not only were we out over $7,000, but we didn't even have a correct diagnosis or course of treatment.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutly dreadful, money making conmen. Our cat was ill, with the same issues he's had before, so we know what was needed. ALL we were BOMBARDED with, was costs, how URGENT it was and that our cat would DIE if we didn't take their advise for $5000. We had gone to this BLUEPEARL people as it was a Sunday. They even started BARTERING and saying that they could do it cheaper, and then even offered us a credit card, NOT that the money was the issue. They wanted to keep our animal in for two days overnight, ALL quite unecessery and would have caused more harm that good with stress. Obviously we took our cat to our regular COMPETENT vet the following day where he was sorted out within half and hour for a couple of hundred dollars. Having spoken to our neighbours and friends in the area, we are told that this company is well known for inflating prices and "finding" issues that don't need medicitating. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE unless it's an absolute emergency. I obviously can't put the name, but a certain vet on 52nd street is a honest and not like theses charletons. A most upsetting day for me and my family and all basically a load of lies to make money. LITERALLY.I also saw the way they were handling our cat , roughly so he was crying. He never bites or scratches. I demanded to take him back bu they insisted he stayed with them and that he would die if he didn't. I kept insisting to the point where I was going to call the police. EVENETUALLY they let him go. VERY rude staff, some woman who just wanted to sell us a credit card, and a very who made the prices up then kept reducing them. They made the big mistake of giving (by me asking different people) for paperwork which shows their trickery. They should be closed down. I would HATE for anyone to go through this. THEY HAVE A VERY BAD REPUTATION IN THE AREA . Nothing but money makers, liars and thieves.

Dr. Williams in neurology took great care of our puggle who came in because he had trouble walking and was in severe pain. Turned out after doing an MRI he had a herniated disc in his spine due to IVDD (degenerative disc disease common in beagles). He is 2 weeks post surgery and able to walk again. Most of the staff was very friendly and helpful. Yes you are going to pay a pretty penny, especially if you don't have pet insurance, for most visits at Blue Pearl but they came highly recommended from both my vet and friends. Dr. Levitin, the head neurologist, also is wonderful. If you need to see one of these doctors, you will be in good hands.

HORROR. Diagnosed my cat with ...

My friend's cat Charlotte was diagnosed with cancer this past September. She had the doctors at the speciality hospital run tests, do x-rays, ct scans. The doctors said the BEST course of treatment for her cat was to AMPUTATE to prevent the spread of cancer. After much agonizing consideration, she followed the veterinary specialists advice. A few weeks AFTER the amputation, the doctor told her that it turned out that THE MASS WAS BENIGN and CHARLOTTE'S LEG HAD BEEN AMPUTATED UNNECESSARILY.

TIPS:

RESEARCH YOUR VETERINARIAN

The best thing that you can do to prevent situations like this is to research your veterinarian before you choose one. All of the organizations listed below keep public records and you can view them and check out any other complaints that may have been filed against your veterinarian.

State Veterinary Medical Board (in your home state)

American Veterinary Medical Association

American Animal Hospital Association

Better Business Bureau

Most of these organizations conduct their own investigation of each complaint and determine which fines, if any, should be applied.

Another resource that you can use is word of mouth. If you're considering using a new veterinarian, be sure to talk to other clients and find out what their position and opinion is on him. This is probably one of your best resources, because it's the best way to get a clear and honest opinion.

As another reviewer wrote "Wi...

As another reviewer wrote "Wish I could go back in time". So do we.

Our beautiful pet would be here today if we had gone

anywhere else. The horrible decision to go to Blue Pearl became a nightmare of unnecessary surgery, pain and suffering for my sweet baby and heartbreaking to witness.

They will rob you blind with their outrageous fees and even worse you could very well lose your pet unnecessarily. I hope my unfortunate story can save someone from bringing their pet to this house of horrors.

Do NOT Go There !

BEWARE THIS BUSINESS IS CHANGING ITS NAME TO BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

Most likely due to all the negative reviews it has gotten here & other other places. Go to Citysearch.com and then enter NYC Vet Specialists where you can register and will see 33 comments and very bad ratings and other bad stories.

You can also file a formal complaint with the investigative office: Office of the Professionals New York State Education Department, 163 West 125th Street, Room 819, New York, NY 10027 Tel: 212-961-4369 Fax: 212-961-4361 To download complaint form go to: www.op.nysed.gov/opd/complain.htm. I wasn't sure if I was going to do this but after seeing that they are changing their name I feel obliged to do so.

Several years ago my cat started to have a seizure & a hard time breathing. My local vet referred me to this veterinary (which required a car svc as I live in the Bronx). After an overnight stay in ICU I was told he had lymphoma but was a very good candidate for chemotherapy. What they failed to mention until we were several thousand $$ into treatment (which he seemed to be handling well & was actually looking healthy) was that he was also suffering from kidney failure. The diets for these diseases are polar opposites. I began to have to give him sub-Q injections which he handled like a champ. This & the chemotherapy went on for months. He didn't hide away as one would expect w/ an animal who doesn't feel well. To wind this up the vet bill ALONE was over $11,000 before he suddenly took a turn for the worse & I went to a local vet to have him put down. Bottom line- NYC Vet Specialists LIE for money & don't really care about your pet - good "bed-side" manner to distract you from realizing that they are literally robbing YOU of your $$ and your pet of its LIFE.
