Teeth Cleaning
As I mentioned before, studies have shown that periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and even depression symptoms. That may sound like a strong statement, but I assure you that we frequently see this with patients, which explains why we want you to have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis. Most insurance plans cover two dental cleanings per year; this is usually sufficient to keep your smile healthy.
Fluoride Treatment
Many of you have been told (or will soon be told) that your child should have dental sealants and fluoride. So what are dental sealants and why does your child “need” fluoride? We’ll try to shed some light on those questions here.
Dental Sealants
While there is a great deal of controversy around ingesting fluoride in drinking water, there is little debate that fluoride administered by dentists has a huge impact on a child’s oral health. It’s also nice to know that there is very little controversy about sealants on children’s primary teeth and the good they do.

Fillings
Resin Composite
Many of my patients come to my office looking to replace their old silver metal, mercury, or black metal fillings with the newer, safer tooth-colored fillings - commonly called composite dental fillings. Tooth-colored fillings are made of a composite resin material that is “flowable”, meaning it is in a gel or liquid form, and the dentist “flows” it into the area of your tooth where she removed the cavity. She then exposes the tooth-colored filling material to a UV light which cures the filling to a hard, strong, and safe solid. Finally, the dentist will remove any excess filling material, adjust the height of your tooth and add some details and anatomy so it looks like your natural teeth.

Patients should also be aware of limitations of various services found in dental plans. For example, many insurance companies require patients to wait for a certain amount of time between the start of your plan (even though you are paying a monthly premium) and the time you obtain major dental care, such as crowns, bridges, etc. This is called a Waiting Period, and it allows the dental insurance companies to collect their money up front. Another common example is that some dental insurance companies place a limit on how many fillings, x-rays, extractions, and cleaning are allowed on a yearly basis. Be sure to ask your HR department or insurance broker about these limitations. You can also ask Dr. Tsai’s team to look up your benefits for you. She and her team want you to get all your entitled benefits.
Bridges
If you have a single tooth that needs to be replaced, then one of the simplest solutions is the dental bridge. It is small, quick, and it is a relatively common way to replace a missing tooth. However, the truth about a dental bridge is that your dentist has to cut down other teeth in order to hold it in place. Your dentist, when placing the dental bridge, will have to grind down the neighboring teeth in order to support the cemented bridge. In addition to this, the gums can recede around the bridge, thus causing the bone that is holding the tooth in place to be reabsorbed by the body, ultimately causing the bridge to fail. And the glue that holds the bridge in place can wear out, creating space for bacteria to hide, which also increases the chance of tooth decay or cavities. So, while a dental bridge is a common and trusted way to replace a missing tooth, there are some long-term problems associated with it that can lead to more serious issues. Especially when you consider the little discussed fact that dental bridges are difficult to floss around and keep clean.

Root Canal Treatment
Historically, dentists were known for general and family dentistry such as filling cavities, extractions, crowns, and root canals (yikes!). What our patients are finding out is that over the past twenty years, there have been many advancements and changes in the services that dentists offer. Not all dentists go the extra mile to complete these advanced trainings, but at Millbrae Dental Care, we have. Why?

Dentures
Both are relatively simple procedures; however, after a graft or sinus lift, you’ll need to wait about four to six months in order to give the graft time to integrate with your natural jaw bone. Sometimes, patients elect to wear a partial denture to fill in the missing tooth while the bone heals.

Dental Implants
To have a dental implant or mini implant placed. Dentists like me, who have gone on to take post-graduate implant training, are able to place dental implants as well as mini implants right in our office.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Usually, you can stay right here in my office. My patients are often surprised when I tell them that they don’t need to find an oral surgeon to have their dental implants placed, gum grafts performed, or bone grafts put in. Time has really changed dentistry and oral surgery. Technology has advanced dentistry far beyond just cleaning teeth and replacing old fillings. Though not all dentists go on to take advanced oral surgery classes and specialty training, many like myself have.
Tooth Extractions
Ridge Augmentation
The other common type of bone graft for dental implants is a Ridge Augmentation, Ridge Enhancement, or Split Ridge. (See the diagram above.) Sometimes, when a patient has lost their tooth many months or years ago, the bone in that area has resorbed (the bone is lost). The remaining bone is too thin to support the dental implant. In such cases, Dr. Tsai would numb the area where the thin wall is, gently pull the gum tissue back, pack or place the bone graft in place, and suture the gum back into place. Sometimes Dr. Tsai will “split” the ridge and pack in the bone graft in order to thicken up the bone for the implant. This procedure typically takes 4-7 months to heal. Once the bone grafting has integrated or is healed, the dental implant can be placed.
Bone Grafting
Above are some price ranges for dental implants. These prices do not include additional services such as sinus lifts, bone grafting, temporary stay-plates, etc. If you have questions about your specific costs, please call us. Though we try hard to standardize the pricing for patients, each case is unique.

Orthodontics
Most dental insurance plans offer basic coverage called preventive dental care, including regular checkups, cleaning, prevention of gum and tooth diseases; maintenance including fillings, extractions; and some major treatments. However, many plans don't cover dental surgery, dentures, or orthodontics. Why don't they cover everything? Basically, it comes down to cost. Dental insurance plans, and employers, don't offer full protection against all scenarios, but they are rather designed to offer monetary benefits that are designed to help you offset your costs. Since employers pay the bulk of the monthly premiums, they alter plans to save themselves money, thereby passing the cost on to you. Actually, most dental plans only cover a portion of total costs of dental treatments.
Invisalign Orthodontics
While this is still true, our patients are quickly learning all the other amazing things a dentist can help you with. From straightening your teeth with invisalign and helping your TMJ pain, to improving your sleep with a sleep apnea device and snore guard. All these are evaluated and diagnosed while we clean your teeth.
Braces
While other plans let the dentist charge the full amount, in our office, we continue to offer our patients the insurance discount price even after they have reached their annual maximum. It's just like it sounds, in the beginning of the year, your $1,500 is replenished and you can start receiving benefits again. The only caveat with this is Ortho. Usually, Ortho or braces/invisalign come out of a separate account. Most plans will pay a lifetime amount of $1500 towards invisalign and braces. Once you have used this up, they will not pay any more.
