Great food and reasonable portion sizes

The cusine here is definitely a blend of Peninsular and Latin American. The bread was fresh and came with a delicious blend of olive oil, garlic, cilantro and other spices. We tried the Tapas sampler, which is large enough to be a small dinner for 2, and liked all the various Tapas so much that it has become a favorite. Another favorite is the Brazilian Caipirinha Naranja drink. On a later visit we tried some of the other small plates, including the Mojo de Ajo (Mexican shrimp with lime and chile) and Mushroom Empanadas and found both delicious. For dessert we had the Spanish Artisan Cheeses, a welcome break from the usual dessert fare of chocolote torte and cheescake. All in all, we enjoyed our evenings and the music very much.

low key

it is ok.....the people who work there are good people.\n\nYelp the cheaty web site that for years was manipulating merchants forcing them to run paid adds is being sued by more than hundreds of merchants who were harrased by Yelp...........over years.\nThis is a great victory.

fun place for drinks, snacks, or a pricey dinner

it's a cool place - perhaps one of the more hip in mountain view, and it offers a good variety of food. the chocolate souffle dessert is one of my faves. good live music and a nice happy hour that offers affordable drinks and appetizers.

Fun atmoshere, excellent food, friendly service.

I went to Cascal on a first date and things couldn't have been any better. With our reservation, we were seated immediately. The bar was very crowded (where I was waiting for my date to arrive) but I still was served a drink within seconds of standing in the crowd. Impressive! After ordering, our food came quickly, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway because the atmoshere was so fun. Live Latin Jazz! Everything I tasted was exquisite including the Sangria. We ended up going back to Cascal on our second date with friends for drinks, and danced to the great music. So much fun, a must in Mountain View. I can't wait to go back again.

Good Sangria!

The food was pretty good and surprisingly filling. We ordered the tapas sampler (nice assortment of tapas dishes, a lot of seafood), corn soup, and wild mushroom empanadas. The soup was the biggest disappointment... it had an anise flavor that just didn't work with corn. And it came in a tiny bowl/shallow dish for $7.50! Although, because it tasted bad, we were glad that the dish was small. The wild mushroom empanadas had a strange sour flavor, not sure if it was from the mushrooms or cheese, but in the end, it wasn't something that I'd rave about. The sangria was very fruity and sweet, a good choice. On the Friday night that we went, there was a live band (great music!) so it was difficult to have conversation, but overall, it felt really fun and lively. I would definitely go again to try other dishes, like the paella.

2nd time is a charm

when Cascal first opened, my boyfirend and I were excited about a tapas place in our neighborhood. The interior is nice, inviting, and comfy. The service was good, Sangria great. The food, though, left much to be desired. My squid ink paella was dry and burnt, the tapas (obviously forgetful) left much to be desired. \n\nI have to admit I am a bit picky, the foodie that I am, but I always try to give every place the benefit of the doubt.\n\nHowever, a second visit about 8 months later, and WOW. The tapas menu was more refined, everything tasted much better, and they have great live music (albeit loud) on the weekend. The food improved so much, we will definitely go back for more.

Not worth the $$$

Very good service, but food is not worth the price you pay. I love tapas, and didn't expect Cascal to be ""authentic"" to be good. However, the cuisine is not inventive enough to return. Picasso in downtown SJ is much better and much less expensive.

Disappointment

While we had our hopes for a decent tapas/nuevo latino restaurant NOT in the city, we were let down. Ramblas, Timos, even Cha Cha Cha greatly outshine the food served at Cascal. Of the four dishes we tried, there was not a single one we could have outdone at home. Overcooked mussels were lost in a sea of chorizo infused suace. The potatoes gratin bacalao was overpowered by some chili and had absolutely no trace of salt cod. We tried the ceviche sampler and were similarly underwhelmed: too much lime and chili here, not enough flavor elsewhere. I've had better ceviche at a tacqueria on Winchester ave... sadly enough. Only the Moraccan veal stew managed to taste the way it should. That is to say the flavors were balanced, but it was average at best. So our problem remains- either make it at home or drive to SF.
