The Personal Touch

I have lived in Oakleaf for 5 years. The staff goes out of their way to make life here very pleasant! When you call the office for anything, they are ready to help. I have known neighbors who called the staff for a ride to the doctor and even for a pick up from the hospital! Maintenace is taken care of the day you call!
Life at Oakleaf is good!

I've been living in Oakleaf townhouses for almost 4 years now and I'll be straight, these other reviews aren't giving these guys the credit that is due.

For sure if you're comparing $1800/mo luxury townhouses in Mt. Pleasant to Oakleaf townhouses, they're a bit dated, but you have to appreciate the extreme value they offer with little sacrifice. It's an awesome location, a large space, and a super responsive staff for a very low price. No question they're the best landlords I've ever had and the best value of a rental you'll find in all of Mount Pleasant.

My boyfriend and I looked at a townhouse in this community. We liked the place, even though it was in some serious need of updating! So we decided we would put in an application, which costs $40. We clearly explained to Janice Skenes (the owner) that we had recently moved to South Carolina, and both my boyfriend and I had job interviews later that week. We were still making a small income at the time, and that was noted on our application. Both my boyfriend and I have outstanding credit, so that wasn't an issue.

1 day after we submitted our applications, I called Janice to tell her the good news---I had been accepted for my new job. During the conversation, Janice was stumbling over her words but managed to say, "You two still might need a co-signer. I'll ask the person who owns the property what they'd like to do." I then explained to her that would be fine, we would have no problem doing that, if needed.

The weekend then went by, and on Monday my boyfriend got the good news---he had been accepted to his new job as well. My boyfriend immediately calls Janice to tell her the good news. When he calls Janice and tells her, he gets a reply of, "Oh, I've already rented that townhouse to someone else." Janice NEVER tried to get in touch with us to tell us that she had rented the townhome to someone else. The last time I had spoken to Janice, she had said, "You'll still probably need a co-signer." That most definitely led me to believe that we had the house, but the only decision to be made was if we did or didn't need a co-signer.

To top it all off, Janice had not cashed our check for $40--which I thought was nice because of the terrible and unprofessional way Janice handled this situation. TWO WEEKS after this whole ordeal, I noticed there was $40 missing from my bank account. That's correct--Janice had cashed my check, even after the way she handled the situation.

So to make a long story short, if you plan on moving to Oakleaf Townhomes, you better be prepared to call twice every hour to make sure Janice hasn't taken your money and given your townhome away to someone else without informing you.

Also, these townhomes have jack-and-jill style bathrooms, and that is horrible for living with kids/roommates. There's not enough parking--when I asked about it, I got an, "Oh, it will be OK, your neighbors don't have many cars." Overall, the townhomes are run-down, generic, and way over-priced for what you're getting. We won't ever consider moving to Oakleaf Townhomes again!

I lived there between 2007-201...

I lived there between 2007-2012.

pros: the apt. design is nice and the environment is friendly and safe for the kids. the rent was somehow reasonable

cons: I don't know where to start from. the cockroaches infested the whole complex in 2012 (not sure if a new comer brought along) and the management didn't take an action until the bugs start coming out of the power outlets!!! the tenants of the 5 adjacent apts had to evacuate the houses for half a day to fumigate. more.... the A/C power underground connection in my apartment were cut off and there was no intention by the management for a major repair so they made an external connection of a LIVE WIRE that extended across the kitchen floor and remained there until the day we left.. again ...the shower faucet has been dripping since the day we moved in and after 3 years of reminder they only decided to fix it when the water went underground. the carpet was obviously not in a perfect shape when I moved in ( we marked that on the checklist), looks like been used for at least a year or so but they still insisted on charging me for carpet replacement after 5 years. the same was for some bench tops and cabinets. the apartment was not painted but rather a few patches here and there. I guess they were expecting the apartment to stay as is after 5 years without any initiative for renovation. I believe in 5 years this apartment should have been renovated twice. I wouldn't recommended for anyone. the only reason I didn't move out is because I didn't want to be tied up with a one year contract in the time where I may lose my job at any time. in any case no refund on deposit.

Personal Service

A few years ago, my house caught fire and I had to find a place to live while the house was rebuilt. Oakleaf was on my way to work, so I called to see if they had an apartment available. Not only did they have an apartment, they helped me find a furniture rental company, and met the guys when they delivered the furniture and washer and dryer. It had been a long time since I'd rented an apartment, but found this one to be really nice. It had been freshly painted, the carpet, though not new, was in great shape, there were white wooden blinds in the windows, and ceiling fans in the kitchen and bedrooms. I was really pleasantly surprised at the amount of closet space. The staff at Oakleaf really took good care of me. They loaned me a hammer to hang pictures. I ended up staying 7 months and I only had one small maintenance issue, but they responded immediately. The apartment was bright and cheery, the grounds were kept really well. If a package came during the day, they put it in my apartment for me. They couldn't have been nicer, and the location couldn't have been better! Ever since I stayed there, I've recommended Oakleaf to lots of people.

Everything in the apartments is old. Heres a sample of the things that were broken in my apartment. Counters delaminating, fridge didn't work correctly, kitchen drawers fell apart(5 times in 2 years), doors did not close correctly(paint issue see below), and my ceiling was leaking because of a broken pipe upstairs. The new windows they installed do not latch properly. They painted my apartment before I moved in......but instead of going around the outlets and wall switches they painted right over them, including the smoke detectors. Thanks Oakleaf. Parking is an absolute mess, there are no designated spaces so its a free for all. Im not confident the maintenance man can change a light bulb with out screwing something up. He changed my kitchen faucet(it was leaking... surprise!) and managed to leave the old handle in the garbage disposal. The bathrooms are tiny. Don't plan on getting your deposit back because they will find a way to nickel and dime you...I got charged for them to re glaze my shower.

This tenant was not a model tenant and did not take care of his townhouse while he lived there. He did have a problem with his diposal because he cleaned his fish tank out in the kitchen sink and rock went in the drain. He did not properly clean before he moved out. Our staff took very good care of this tenant.
