When your pet is brought in for a dental cleaning, the teeth will be cleaned with an ultrasonic scater that removes tartar and the bacteria. We will examine the gum-line and check for pockets that may have developed between the gum and teeth. We polish the teeth and apply a sealant to help prevent future dental disease. If there is significant decay or bone loss aroudn the roots, we surgically extract the affected teeth.

Dental Care

Veterinary Ophthalmology
There are no signs specific for FeLV infection, because it can affect any organ system. The main effect of the virus is to disrupt the cat’s immune system. While anemia is the most common disorder caused by the virus, cancer and various other diseases are common. Some disorders commonly associated with FeLV include: chronic GI or respiratory disease; chronic infection of the mouth, gums and tongue; chronic eye disease; frequent or chronic skin disease and frequent or chronic urinary tract infections.
Behavioral Counseling
Annual exams are important to ensure that healthy pets stay healthy. At the annual visit, the doctor will determine the pet’s vaccine requirements, based on age, health and lifestyle. Recommendations will be made regarding diet, exercise, grooming and behavior modification. For animals that are debilitated or geriatric, it is important to examine and assess their overall health and response to medical treatment at least once a year, maybe more.

Even though Minnesota’s climate does not support a year-round population of mosquitoes, we are seeing more cases of heartworm disease in the last several years. There are likely many reasons for this. Dogs travel with their owners more now than ever before, and many will join their owners in warmer climates during the winter months. Local animal shelters often will bring in dogs and cats from the south, where many shelters cannot accommodate them. Dogs are typically heartworm tested prior to transport, but due to the life cycle of the heartworm, there is a window where dogs may test negative but still have heartworms. Heartworm in these dogs may go undetected for several months or more, allowing them to serve as a source of infection for other dogs. Still another cause is inadequate prevention. Many pet owners believe that heartworm prevention only needs to be given during the summer months, leaving their pet vulnerable during the late spring and early fall. While mosquitoes may not be as numerous during those times, they are still active.

The importance of wellness care cannot be overstated. Many ailments that affect your pet may not be noticed right away, and waiting until there is a problem will reduce the change of effective treatment. Because of this, when you bring your pet in to be vaccinated we will perform a full physical examination. Our doctors will assess heart, lungs, joint mobility, skin and coat condition. We will also discuss changes in your pet’s habits. We also ask that you bring a sample of your pet’s feces in with you to be examined for intestinal parasites at least once a year, and when diarrhea occurs.

Our veterinarians utilize an objective scale, called the Body Condition Score, to evaluate your pet’s overall body condition/weight, and make diet recommendations accordingly.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Most people don’t realize the impact that an infected mouth has on their pet. Gingivitis and periodontal disease are even more common in pets than in people, but you wouldn’t necessarily know it from looking at them. The teeth we routinely see are the canines and incisors in the front of the mouth. These teeth may appear clean and healthy while the less visible molars may harbor infection. Infected teeth and gums can cause pockets to develop which can lead to tooth root abscesses. The bacteria can then spread, via the blood-stream, to other parts of the body.

Dr. Samantha Gardner went to undergrad at North Dakota State University studying zoology and biochemistry. She then received her DVM degree from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Gardner’s interests include surgery, dentistry, wound care, and preventative care. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors hiking, fishing, playing volleyball and softball, and watching Minnesota sports teams. She has one cat named Pepper.

Our pets are adept at hiding illnesses and injuries they may have. Because of this, we use state of the art laboratory equipment to get an inside picture of what your pet isn’t showing on the outside. In our in-house laboratory, we perform tests on blood, urine and feces obtaining same day results. For tests that we don't run in house, we use a reference lab.
X-Ray
OKAH is proud to offer digital radiography. This state of the art technology allows us to take and process x-ray images in house, in a matter of minutes. With improved speed and image quality, digital x-rays improve our ability to diagnose and treat critical patients quickly. It also allows us to forward images to specialists for second opinions, as needed.
Dental Radiology
At the time of your pet’s wellness exam, a veterinarian may recommend a dental cleaning to remove dental plaque and to prevent or treat gingivitis. This procedure requires that your pet be placed under general anesthesia so that a thorough exam of the teeth, gums and oral cavity can be done. Then the veterinary staff scales and polishes your pet’s teeth, and applies a fluoride treatment. Dental x-rays are performed on teeth that are deemed unhealthy, and based on the results, the doctor determines the best course of action for those teeth. Sometimes that results in extraction of unhealthy teeth. After the procedure, the veterinary staff will advise you on the best way to maintain your pet’s healthy teeth and gums.
Microchipping
A microchip provides permanent identification of your pet’s ownership. Most animal hospitals, shelters and humane societies in the country are equipped with a microchip scanner. If your pet is found, he/she can be scanned and the microchip information will allow safe return home.
