There are two commonly-used vaccines for prevention of pneumonia caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Pneumoniae. Although this is not the only bug that causes pneumonia, it is the most common bacteria that causes pneumonia.

Side effects caused by long term use of steroids (longer than one month) include the following: osteoporosis (fragile and weak bones), easy bruising of the skin, cataracts, weight gain with fullness in the face, increased risk of stomach ulcer, increased risk of infection, and suppression of adrenal function. Take oral steroids as directed (usually prescribed once a day) and with food to decrease stomach irritation. These risks of long term steroid therapy can be reduced by taking steroids as a single dose every other morning.

This is an enhanced form of bronchoscopy that allows for sampling of lymph nodes in the chest. It is useful for diagnosis and staging suspected or confirmed cancer or other lung diseases. In many cases it is performed under full anesthesia.
Radiology
The procedure is done by the hospital’s radiology doctor using a CT scanner or fluoroscopy to localize the spot in the lung. The skin is cleaned and then anesthetized with a novocaine-like drug. The numbing of the skin and pleura (lining of the lung) causes some mild pain but reduces further pain during the biopsy.

People are getting CT scans more often, and when these CT scans involve the lung it is common to find small spots, which are called lung nodules. Most lung nodules found are not cancerous, and are usually due to some current or past infection. However, a nodule is more or less likely to be cancerous based on the size, appearance, and growth rate. The likelihood also depends on the person’s age and smoking history. If these factors suggest a particular lung nodule is likely to be cancerous, then a biopsy is usually done. On the other hand, if a particular lung nodule is not very likely to be cancerous, we often monitor for growth by repeating CT scans over time. Sorting out which lung nodules are serious and which are not usually requires specialty care by a pulmonologist.
