Glaucoma
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight.” It is a disease of the optic nerve, which is the part of the eye that carries the images we see to our brain. The optic nerve is made up of many nerve fibers and when damage to an optic nerve fiber happens, blind spots develop. It usually occurs with no pain and so gradually that you may not know you have lost any vision until it has fully progressed. At that point, you cannot get the lost vision back. This is why it is extremely important to have regular comprehensive eye examinations after the age of 40. These exams test for glaucoma and other eye diseases to stop them in their tracks.

Raji Mulukutla, M.D. received her B.A., as well as a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, and is a 1989 graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Raji completed her ophthalmology training at Temple University Hospital, and in her final year, served as Chief Resident.
Macular Degeneration
When diagnosed with macular degeneration, you will be told to monitor your vision at home. You should try to incorporate the amsler grid into your daily schedule. This is an important tool for tracking early changes in your macula.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dr. Shriver took part in the original FDA trials for LASIK approval and has performed over 10,000 LASIK procedures. His LASIK treatments include many VIP’s – fellow eye doctors, surgeons, Hall of Fame athletes, Special Forces personnel, and news anchors. Dr. Shriver also performed LASIK surgery on members of his own family. Both Dr. Shriver and his wife have had LASIK. Since 1991, Dr. Shriver has been an invited national lecturer on the Excimer laser and laser vision correction. He routinely teaches and proctors other Ophthalmologists in basic and advanced techniques on refractive procedures and LASIK in Connecticut, New England, and the United States.
Cataracts

Some patients will see halos around lights, suffer from glare at night or in bright sun, or other visual disturbances. Please Note: When you come in for your medical eye examination, please wear your contact lenses into the office and bring your boxes. During your eye exam, the health of your eyes and contact lens (considered a medical device in your eye) will be evaluated. If any changes are needed you will be referred to our licensed opticians. If you are dilated at your medical exam, you will be asked to make an appointment to return when you are not dilated. Kristy G. Mascarenhas, M.D., received her B.A. with distinction in Spanish from Yale University, then graduated from New York University School of Medicine in 2006. After an internal medicine internship at Georgetown University Hospital, she completed her ophthalmology residency at New York University/Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. She then returned to Yale University for a glaucoma fellowship, where she became the second eye surgeon in Connecticut to be trained in Trabectome minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. She now offers a wide range of minimally invasive and noninvasive glaucoma treatments, which can be adapted to patientsâ€™ lifestyles and stages of glaucoma. In addition to her clinical work as a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Mascarenhas is interested in the impact of glaucoma and its treatment on patientsâ€™ quality of life.

Eyelid Surgery
Fortunately, there is help for drooping lids. An eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty. Blepharo (referring to the eyelid) and plasty (referring to the surgery) is performed by our Middlesex Eye Physicians ophthalmologists at the surgery center. The excess tissue and fat may be removed from your lids; your levator muscle may be reinforced.

Skin Cancer
It is very important to regularly evaluate facial skin for any abnormal growths. If you notice a new growth or an older growth is not going away it is important to have this checked by a medical professional. While most growths when evaluated are benign, there are times when the growth can be a form of skin cancer. Some growths look like moles while others may differ in color or size.

The skin around the eyes and eyelids are very sensitive and at Middlesex Eye Physicians we have specialists specially trained to treat skin growths and lesions in this area. If you have the typical skin growth (skin tumor) and it is found not to be cancerous, this may be removed in our minor surgical suite in our office. Other larger growths that are possible skin cancer may require treatment at our eye surgery center by our board-certified ophthalmologist.
