Certified by the American Board of Surgery with over 15 years of experience, Dr. Harsha U. Jayawardena currently treats patients at Mason City Clinic and Iowa Methodist Medical Center, where he specializes in laparoscopic surgery and trauma/critical care. Dr. Jayawardena graduated with his medical degree from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka, and also completed a Master of Surgery postgraduate degree, for which he received the Dr. P. R. Anthonis Gold Medal for his top performance. Dr. Jayawardena then traveled to the UK, where he served as a Senior House Officer of Orthopedic Surgery at Dorking Hospital, and then as a resident in Emergency Medicine at East Surrey Hospital. After coming to the US in 1988, Dr. Jayawardena completed additional residency training in General Surgery at St. Agnes Hospital, as well as a fellowship in Traumatology and Critical Care at the University of Maryland. This extensive training was furthered through special courses in laparoscopic surgery, in which he has participated in several research studies and presented his findings.
