Child Abuse
The Special Victims Unit handles all aspects of prosecution of Domestic Violence cases as well as Severe Child Abuse cases. The Unit works closely with victims of crime to assist families in terminating the cycle of abuse while also ensuring that they are treated with dignity and respect. It is our mission to educate victims of crime on the protection of their rights, while at the same time aggressively prosecuting their offenders.

DUI/DWI
The 14th Judicial District Adult Specialty Court Program is a joint endeavor between the Judges of the 14th Judicial District and Calcasieu Parish District Attorney Stephen C. Dwight. The Honorable David A. Ritchie and the Honorable Michael G. Canaday are the presiding Judges over Adult Drug Court and DWI court. The Honorable Robert L. Wyatt and the Honorable Derrick Kee are the presiding judges over Behavioral Health Court and Re-Entry Court. The Honorable David A. Ritchie and the Honorable Kendrick J. Guidry preside over Veterans Treatment Court. The Honorable Tony Fazzio also sits on our Specialty Court Team.
Sex Crimes
LeAnn Adams from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office Sex Crimes Division. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and to educate the public and advocate for victims of sexual assault, Lieutenant Dore and Sergeant Adams share what their jobs entail, what grooming behaviors are, and give advice to parents on what to look out for. Fraud
Both Dwight and Mancuso urge citizens to report suspected fraud even if they are unsure whether actual criminal fraud has been committed. “We’ll look into the situation and determine if a crime has been committed,” said Mancuso. “If it has, we will file charges.”
Robbery
Today, Judge David Ritchie found Kendrick N. Shepherd, 35, Sulphur, to be a fourth or subsequent habitual offender. Due to Shepherd’s violent criminal history, Judge David Ritchie sentenced Shepherd to the mandatory life sentence without benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. Misdemeanors
There are usually several cases set for trial on the same day or in the same week. Subpoenas are issued for the witnesses, and in felony cases, a jury is selected. A felony criminal trial can last up to a week, and a misdemeanor trial will last about an hour or more. All trials consist of opening arguments, testimony and closing arguments. In most felony trials, the jury will decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty. In misdemeanor trials, the judge will decide.
Murder
Yesterday, April 20, 2023, Jermaine Washington, Jr., 27, Lake Charles, was found guilty as charged of First Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. In 2018, Washington was hired to kill. Washington strategically planned and fatally shot the victim. Juvenile Crimes
Our Juvenile Delinquency Division handles the prosecution of all the juvenile crimes in our parish, as well as the Families in Need of Services (FINS) matters. Depending on the age of the offenders, many of these types of cases can initially be handled without court action by an Assistant District Attorney who makes a referral to the intake department of the Parish Office of Juvenile Justice Services.
