Kyle grew up in Canby, Oregon. As a kid, she was constantly playing doctor with her sisters and classmates - she even competed in elementary school science fairs with presentations on ear mechanics and osteoporosis! She completed her undergraduate degree in biology at University of Oregon followed by medical school at Oregon Health & Science University. In her journey into medicine she has explored a number of specialties including neurology, rheumatology, pathology, and orthopedics - always finding her way back to family medicine. Kyle chose family medicine as her specialty because of the broad scope of practice, opportunities to teach others, and the joy she finds in interacting with patients longitudinally. She is thrilled to be living out her childhood dream at Cascades East Family Medicine Residency. In her spare time, she enjoys reading novels, taking long walks, and exploring new places with her husband (Austin) and mini australian shepherd (Nyx).
Pediatric Care
The pediatric rotation provides experience and instructions in both inpatient and outpatient pediatrics, including the assessment and management of children with a wide variety of pediatric problems, supervised by community pediatricians. Opportunities exist for residents to do puberty teaching talks in local elementary schools. Residents participate in admissions, inpatient rounding and seeing patients in the emergency department.
Primary Care
Residents are given the opportunity to tailor their learning settings in the third year. As a result, residents can choose between the Maternity Care/OB, Hospital Care/Teaching, and Primary Care Leadership tracks at the end of their second year.
Family Practice
Cascades East Family Medicine Residency has embraced comprehensive family medicine education through a modified “Clinic First” model. We believe that continuity of care is the core of what we do and have shifted our educational structure to emphasize the importance of continuity clinic throughout residency. We are also comprehensivists who train for the broad scope of practice needed to meet the needs of rural communities. To this end, we have named our new curriculum, ‘Balanced Family Medicine’ to honor these values. Inpatient rotations are limited to two weeks at a time and clinic weeks and longitudinal experiences are interspersed throughout the mini-block (2 week) model.
Emergency Care
Emergency Medicine and Trauma Track. Second and third year residents obtain ATLS certification and spend additional elective rotations in the emergency department. They learn to lead the stabilization of trauma patients as a member of the trauma team, preparing them to work in rural emergency departments after graduation.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmology
Training in otolaryngology, urology, and ophthalmology occur in Klamath Falls in order to further residents' skills in recognizing, managing and coordinating primary care issues related to each of these fields.

Gynecology
This rotation occurs under the supervision of obstetrician/gynecologists in Klamath Falls and also working with family physicians in setting emphasizing gynecological and reproductive health care. Residents participate in the evaluation of outpatients and performance of procedures such as endometrial biopsy and colposcopy. Reproductive health procedures and work in a public health clinic is also included.
Obstetrics
As third-year residents on MCH/obstetrics, have greater independence and involvement triaging and managing patients at the Family Birthing Center. Residents gain skills in both low and high risk obstetrics and assist on C-sections. Options for primary C-section training exist through our C-section pager program, through which recent residents have primaried more than 65 C-sections.
Pregnancy

Internal Medicine
Residents have responsibility for the in-hospital and longitudinal care of these patients under the supervision of family medicine and internal medicine faculty. The first year residents work as part of a team along with a second or third year resident on the Resident Medical Team.
Urology
Our hospital has 176 beds, and specialist we have available at our institution include inpatient cardiology, surgery, gynecology. And access to local urology, ENT, orthopedics, pulmonology, dermatology, rheumatology, wound care, and our wellness center.
Endoscopy
Bob started in the Navy, doing his internship and becoming an Undersea Medical Officer and Deep Sea Diver. After four years at the Naval Submarine Medical Research Lab he decided to go inland and complete his residency at Cascades East Family Medicine. His medical interests include lots of procedures and endoscopy of almost any orifice. He enjoys camping and skiing with his wife and two kids, and makes great barbecue and beer. He is the Medical Director for Cascades East Family Medicine.
Prostate Cancer
I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to participate in the Oregon FIRST program. The longitudinal program allowed for more in-depth learning and continuity that is difficult to replicate in the fourth year of medical school. Some of my most cherished patients from residency were ones I met during my Oregon FIRST year: a gentleman I diagnosed with and helped through prostate cancer treatment and into remission. A woman who had her initial OB visit during winter of my MS4 year; she delivered in the fall of my intern year--and I delivered her second child in my third year. It was also an opportunity to build community, both within the residency and outside of it. Having a support system in place as I started intern year was so helpful and allowed me to focus on making the transition from med student to intern. The Oregon FIRST program is a unique and special program, it set me up for success intern year and beyond.

Tim is interested in how APPs can increase access to primary care services via telemedicine and mobile community outreach clinics. In addition, he is interested in mental health, addiction medicine, heart disease, and preventative medicine.
Behavioral Health
Kimberly grew up in Mid-coast, Maine where she became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and has built a career as a social service professional. She strongly believes in the relationship between the biological, psychological, and social domains of healthcare; and values the wraparound model of care. Professionally, she is practiced in providing individual and group therapeutic interventions in an integrated behavioral health environment; non-profit administration; and higher education; and is experienced in crisis management, youth and life-skills development, mentoring, assessment, and intervention, as well as, program administration and facilitation. Personally, Kimberly enjoys board games, traveling, reading and having adventures with friends, family, and her dog.

Ultrasound
We have monthly trainings on topics as diverse as trauma assessment, bedside echo, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening, soft tissue and abscess evaluation, obstetrical skills and others. We have an optional "Cascades East Point of Care Ultrasound Certificate” for those who wish to pursue it. Faculty experts do monthly ultrasound clinics with residents, and many residents do electives for additional mastery. Dedicated ultrasound machines, including handhelds are available in the inpatient and outpatient settings to ensure that no opportunity is missed.
Radiology
Nellie worked as faculty for five years at Cascades East before relocating to Vermont for her partner's residency in radiology. She worked at the University of Vermont as family medicine faculty for those five years before returning to her beloved Klamath Basin. She has received numerous faculty teaching awards across both institutions. She loves spending time with her partner and two wonderful daughters and trying to convince them to hike up Hogsback with her.

Mammography
With her public health interest peaked, she opted to attend Florida International University, a community based medical school in Miami, where she could maintain community connections made during her MPH. She took on projects working on harm reduction education, mammography services for uninsured women, and gun violence prevention. Her favorite rotation was 8-weeks of Family Medicine, working on a mobile health clinic where she saw and treated uninsured individuals all-across Miami-Dade County. Dedicating her time and efforts to the needs of underserved communities, Family Medicine became the clear choice.

Orthopedics
Our structured exposure to orthopedics includes one block with the orthopods in the first year and another focusing on sports medicine in the third year. The first year rotation emphasizes outpatient management of common office problems and fracture care. Sports medicine experience and operative orthopedics are also part of this rotation. In addition, we have a specialty teaching from an experienced orthopedist for orthopedic problems in the family medicine center.
Wound Care
Caleb studied microbiology at the University of Wyoming and went to medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine (WWAMI-WY). Volunteering with Hospice of Laramie, the Downtown Clinic, and Interfaith food pantry filled his free time when he wasn’t studying. He is passionate about rural medicine and has special interests in emergency medicine, wound care, and community needs.
Neurosurgery
The critical care rotation is four weeks in length and takes place in either Bend, Oregon, or in Klamath Falls. The rotation includes procedural training and supplements the learning we already receive while caring for ICU patients on the inpatient medicine team. The emphasis is on cardiology and pulmonary medicine. This is a busy rotation for trauma and critical care, as the Bend hospital performs cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery. Residents are supervised by a team of pulmonologist/intensivists. Housing is provided in Bend.

John feels extremely fortunate to have joined CEFM and continue his training rural community. His interests in medicine include rural/underserved medicine, emergency medicine, and sports medicine. In his free time John enjoys hiking, fishing, reading fantasy novels, and spending time with his wife four boys, Jackson, James, Eddie and Sam.
