X-rays
With contemporary safeguards, such as lead aprons and digital x-rays, the amount of radiation received in a dental x-ray is extremely small. Even though there is very little risk, pediatric dentists are particularly careful to minimize the exposure of child patients to radiation. Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are an important part of Preventive Dentistry. Sealants are used to protect teeth that have deep grooves or pits from getting cavities, primarily the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where most cavities in children are found. Sealants are normally easy to place and do not require local anesthesia. Any tooth that is susceptible to cavities, including primary (i.e., baby) teeth, is a candidate for sealant application, including newly-erupted permanent bicuspids and molars. The dental sealant is the most economical preventive restoration.
Space Maintainers
When a baby tooth in the back part of the mouth is lost too early, usually as a result of removal from extensive tooth decay, a space maintainer may be required. A space maintainer will hold the empty space open until the permanent tooth takes its natural position in the child’s mouth. Early loss of a baby tooth without a space maintainer results in the remaining baby teeth drifting into the space to fill the gap. Space maintainers prevent this and they often prevent the need for future costly orthodontic treatment.

Resin infiltration is primarily used to arrest the progression of small cavities between the teeth in the flossing areas. The aim of the resin infiltration technique is to allow penetration of the resin into the porous enamel which then serves as a barrier to acids and theoretically prevents the cavity from progressing. Resin infiltration is also a technique used to improve the cosmetic appearance of front teeth that have white and brown spotting after braces are removed or due to enamel hypomineralization.
